Mera Review Padhke Dekkho

The buzzword is G-A-Y!

In this comedy of errors by debutante producer Punam Sinha (Shotgun Sinha’s wifey) and debutante director Rohit Kaushik, the confusion in sexualities is the central theme. The film tries to cash in on the comedy flavour of the season, but poor promotion and absence of big star fail the effort.

The film opens with a young Rahul (Punit Tejwani) singing in a pizza hut about the impending arrival of a female homosapien. The song “woh aanewali hai” is one of the few pleasant melodies of the movie. Towards the end of the song, he finds himself in his bedroom which he shares with three other friends of his who appear to be homeless. Other inhabitants of his sprawling bungalow are his father (Jackie Shroff let loose) and mother (Archana Puransingh in great form!).

The lady in question turns out to be Archie (Koel Purie) who is a Southall based Punjabi kudi with parents Jaspal & Savita Bhatti (at their hilarious best). Archie had been serenaded by Rahul on his London holiday and the female starts dreaming of marital bliss with the guy. The nerve!

Her trip to India is to finalise this dream. But Rahul has no such intentions. After a sob story about ailing parents, he eventually convinces her to hide in his bedroom until the time is right.

And so begins a chaotic routine with everyone imagining everyone else having affairs with each other. Rahul’s father is a womanizer who hobnobs (in more ways than one) with his Bong ladyfriend in his closet. Rahul’s mother is an “Art of Giving” (LOL) follower and keeps lapsing into her deep breathing sessions without any warning. The two keep having frequent arguments which lead to some hilarious moments.

Rahul’s three friends (Carran Kapoor, Neil Bhoopalam and Premjit Singh) also join in the chaos. More comedy of errors ensues and insinuations of people having straight as well as gay affairs do the rounds. Towards the climax of this pathetic series of events, Archie finally decides to settle for what turns out to be the only real gay guy in the entire cast. And the chaos goes on….

Veterans Jackie and Archana do a competent job – and are reasonably over-the-top as demanded by the script. The Bhatti couple entertain with their trademark brand of humour. Of the three friends, Carran Kapoor and Premjit Singh have slightly meatier parts and deliver well The third guy is barely noticed. The lead pair looks cute (though Koel looks older than Punit) and passes muster.

The music by Jatin Lalit is passable with a few good tunes here and there.

What is novel about this movie is that the situations are new and the cast is fresh. Some of the dialogues are funny but the premise is quite flimsy and ridiculous.

It’s a watch-and-forget movie – if you have spare time that is!
