I wanted to convert my LCD TV to smart TV. I wanted to watch movies from USB directly; this is not supported by my TV. So, went ahead with Micromax Smartstyk, as there is no other alternative as of now (there are some Chinese products available, but they don’t even have a name).
I bought it from Indiatimes Shopping for INR 5500 as it is not available in any electronic shop and was very happy for couple of days.
As I started using it more, I realized why this product is not sold by any electronic shops like croma.
I’ve given only 2 stars because, this device can do anything, but doesn’t complete whatever it starts of with.
Following are few examples:
Remote was dropped from a table which is hardly 2 feet tall. It completely stopped working. The red light supposed to glow only during charging is on always even when not connected to the charger. Anyhow, I’m very happy for that. Because, the remote is such a pain to use that you will stop using it in few days. It is neither accurate nor works after 10 feet. Wireless mouse works like charm.
HDD is not at all recognized. Even USB of 4GB is not recognized sometimes. Multiple attempts/restarts are necessary.
While watching movies, after 1 hour, the video develops some sort of distortion and audio stops. After several restarts, it recovers.
After couple of weeks, the device is totally unpredictable. It restarts by itself randomly. Even during startup, TV loses HDMI signal and the device has to be restarted.
Doesn’t remember Date/Location settings. Gets reset to default.
I’ve given 2 stars because:
It WORKS well SOMETIMES :)
It works with USB wired/wireless mouse
Components included are of much use, such as the USB hub
Apps can be downloaded and installed from Google Play store.
This product has hell lot of bugs which makes it unusable if you are planning to use it for purposes other than browsing for short duration.
Also, 5K is not worth for a device which doesn’t have many h/w that standard phones have got. We should wait for some more time for the price to come down and the quality to go up.
It is also shame on Indiatimes Shopping that they don’t publish my reviews. Only good reviews are seen for this product which might be because of some "internal" gains.
