Advantage women

We all know that women are still perceived as the weaker sex in many societies in India. Women are still at a disadvantage in many areas as they are more vulnerable than men are even in today’s age of women empowerment. (Brute force still wins over empty platitudes of equality right?)

There is however one area in which the women are at a distinct advantage (unfairly so) and that area is the Indian Judiciary. The laws pertaining to dowry, child custody and other marriage related issues are all in the favor of women.

The tragedy is that some women are misusing these laws for their own (unrightfully and sometimes undeserving) benefits. It’s not unheard of in today’s society to hear of women who have mentally tortured (some cases show even physically abused - talk of reversal of roles!) their partners and even denied them their conjugal rights. Women can be strong and even evil (all mothers-in-law say aye!) sometimes. They have the capacity. Most of you might know of one such woman!

Defenseless men (yes this breed of men has suddenly cropped up!) are left with their hands tied as the women threaten to use their ace - the threat to lodge a complaint against them for harassment! In such cases, unfit mothers get custody of children while more deserving fathers are left bereft and women get away with everything but murder. A more thorough and unbiased investigation always reveals the truth.

Our laws are so outdated and biased - and not only in these cases otherwise, rapists would not be set free. Isn’t it about time the laws and Judicial System underwent an overhaul so that we can achieve a society of equals in the true sense of the word?
