The lost generation

Okay. We’ve had dozens of movies about ABCD’s and hundreds of movies about Indian people in India. What about the generation in between? The one that immigrated? That generation has been virtually ignored...until now. Mitr is the story of one such immigrant Lakshmi. As a housewife, she has always based her identity on her daughter and her husband.    However, both her husband Prithvi and her daughter Divya ignore her and treat her like a piece of furniture. Divya is the typical (well not typical, but typical in terms of what is usually portrayed) ABCD. She doesn’t want to go to college. She treats her mom with utter disrespect. But she doesn’t hate her culture. She simply hates her mother. Still, She does have a very close bond with her father. Together both of them unite to make Lakshmi feel unwanted and ignored. Lakshmi becomes desperately lonely. She even talks to plants. Enter the neighbor Steve and his cute little brother. And a secret Internet friend. They help Lakshmi recover her self-esteem and find her purpose in life. This provokes the anger of both Divya and Prithvi, who are used to seeing Lakshmi revolve around them. Then the ending comes along and everyone is reunited. A quiet story with loads of meaning.
