Motorola G4 Play Full Review

The Moto G4 Play and Moto E3 Power are currently the best offerings by the Lenovo owned Motorola. If you’re not really a fan of Chinese devices

like Redmi, Coolpad, Meizu or OnePlus, Motorola devices have really proven themselves to be quite long lasting companions.

Now, within the budget segment of 10K, we’ve these 2 phones and without much delay I would like to review how both these phones fair against each other.

-

Build Quality:->

-

Both the Moto E3 Power and G4 Play look quite similar to each other. Both feature a plastic body with a sort of textured finish. But the E3 Power houses a separate speaker grill at the bottom bezels while the G4 Play has a mono grill at the top for the earpiece and speaker. The sound output is better on E3 Power due to the extra grill.

The back of E3 Power lacks a textured finish while the G4 Play has a texture design on back, making it easy to hold in hand.

Screen & Display:->

-

Both the Moto E3 Power and G4 Play feature a 5" inch 720 x 1280 pixels 294 ppi pixel density display. It’s fairly bright and offers great contrast thanks to the low black levels. Sunlight legibility is also good.

Both the phones have Corning Gorilla Glass 3 Protection and Nano Coating which makes them splash proof or accidental water spillings.

While the Moto G4 Play has Moto Display and One Handed Mode, the E3 Power doesn’t have them.

Performance:->

-

The E3 Power runs on a MediaTek 6735P QuadCore CPU, which houses four Cortex-A53s clocked at 1GHz and a Mali-T720 GPU. You get 2GB of Ram. On the first boot you’ll find around 1.1GB to be free. Switching between apps and multi-tasking is fluid. The phone has noticeable lags on heavy usage. The device performs poorly on heavy gaming, although midrange games like Subway Surfers run well without any issues. No heating issues as well.

The G4 Play runs on a Snapdragon 410 Quad Core CPU, which houses four Cortex-A53s clocked at 1.2GHz and a Adreno 306 GPU. You get 2GB of Ram. On the first boot you’ll find around 900 MB to be free. Ram management seems poor on G4 Play as compared to E3 Power as the usage seems to be more. But surprisingly the device fares better to E3 Power in terms of multi-tasking and Gaming due to a powerful CPU. Asphalt 8 runs smoothly without any issue. The device heats upto 38.C to 40.C which isn’t always an issue.

Storage:->

-

Both the Moto E3 Power and G4 Play come with 16GB of Internal Storage. You get upto 11GB free on E3 Power while around 10.5GB on the G4 Play. Both the phones support USB OTG.

Expandable Storage:

E3 Power: 32GB via MicroSD Card

G4 Play: 128GB via MicroSD Card

Camera:->

-

Both the E3 Power and G4 Play house a 8MP Rear and 5MP Front facing Camera. The performance is above average in daylight and proper lighting conditions. The Camera performs average in night and low light. The flash is really helpful in low light. The device runs Moto’s Stock Camera app with a Shutter button. You can use the exposure mode, Panoroma, HDR or Video Modes. While the E3 Power can only record 720p videos, G4 Play can record upto 1080p videos. The Camera focusing on E3 Power is better than that of G4 Play, so is the post image processing but the shutter speed is better in G4 Play.

The Selfie Camera will really delight you. You can always use a 3rd Party filter app on the both these devices to take some neat selfies.

Battery:->

-

While the E3 Power comes with a 3600maH battery, the G4 Play comes with a 2800maH battery. The battery on E3 Power is nothing short to incredible and easily lasts for a day with moderate usage. and last over 1.5 days but with heavy usage lasts only upto 9 to 10 hours. You can get screen on-time of 8 to 9 hours easily. The rapid charger bundled with the phone takes 3.5 hours to 4 hours to fully charge the device.

The G4 Play lasts upto a day with moderate usage but with heavy usage lasts only upto 7 to 8 hours. The G4 Play also comes with the rapid charger and the charging takes around 3 hours.

Both the phones feature a removable battery.

4G Network & Jio:->

-

Both Moto E3 Power and G4 Play support VoLTE(Band 40) and can be used with a Reliance Jio Sim Welcome Offer. Yes, you can dial numbers from Stock Dialer without connecting to Mobile Data. Bear in mind that the phones reach upto a temperature of 40.C when continuously on 4G.

Battery Life on 4G:->

-

With continuous 4G usage, the E3 Power can last for 6 to 7 hours while the G4 Play lasts upto 5 hours.

Software & OS:->

-

Both the Moto E3 Power and G4 Play run of Stock Android version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Minor Tweaks by Motorola. Although the E3 Power is a month old, it won’t get the Android Nougat 7.0 update which is a huge disappointment for budget users, while the G4 Play with 14 other devices will get Android 7.0 Nougat Update.

Conclusion->

-

The E3 Power proves to be the obvious choice if you want a device that performs better on battery life as well as the Camera. The E3 Power is available every Monday via Flash sales on Flipkart for Rs 7999.

The G4 Play although has a smaller battery is a better performer with the powerful CPU and higher capacity for storage via MicroSD Card. The G4 Play will also get the Nougat Update.

If you’re not into heavy usage and Android Updates, the E3 Power should be your choice.
