Speed is the essential difference.... while I rate MSN Messenger as a faster service than Yahoo .... Hotmail is the slowest and the most tedious of mail accounts that I have.
In MSN, you can take up any name and the name can be changed by visiting tools/options ... many of my friends use imaginative names .... so go like ’’Nishkama Karma’’ or ’’Obscured By Clouds’’ .... and these friends of mine are also a part of MouthShut. Names on personal request ... I have seen people using these names in all contexts and I find it very interesting ....
Frankly, I dont know .... but MSN used it before Yahoo and MSN’s ’’Emotiocons’’ look much better than Yahoo’s ’’Smileys’’

Archiving of Messages - I always like to see what chat I had with a friend of mine, reflect on it and relive those good times on chat. MSN does not allow this...
Buzz!!! - I find the buzz options useful because, I write a message to friend and buzz him and hence I can capture his attention
Web Cam - Yahoo brought this option and half my friends shifted to Yahoo. I am waiting for MSN to bring their Webcam service
The ggod things about MSN service is that
It has a better audio quality than Yahoo for voice chat
File transfers are faster in MSN than Yahoo
Overall User friendly nature
Recommendation: If you can afford only one of the two and your idea is just chat and not the value added services like web cam ., go for MSN Messenger
