Mumbai Meri Jaan is worth one time watch

I have lived in Mumbai for just four years - 2004 to 2008. But still it is a very dear city to me. And I have witnessed two major incidents during this period i.e. 26th July floods and 7/11 train bombings and I have seen Mumbaites rose from such disasters with praise worthy speed. This movie tries to depict the same Mumbai spirit and is successful a little in the effort.

There are five independent stories revolving around the period of 7/11 mumbai train serial blasts involving five characters played by some very good actors in our industry today. If you don’t like anything else in the movie, you will definitely like the performance by Paresh Rawal, KK Menon, Irfaan Khan, Madhavan and Soha Khan.

All these stories depict a differnt strata of Mumbai society and living which were one way or the other effected by aftermaths of the blasts. And  in the end it shows, how they slowly comes back to normal life because life goes on.

The premise of the story is, actually, not the aftermath of 7/11 blasts but the spirit of 24/7 non-stop Mumbai people. They are many touchy scenes in the movie. The direction, editing etc is quite good. The climax is excellent showing the two minute silence observed by Mumbai a week after blasts and the famous ’Mumbai Meri Jaan’ song playing in the background.

Why the movie was not a hit is pretty obvious. In spite of brilliant acting, praise worthy direction and other technical qualities, the movie lacks in that binding force for its viewers. The movie is a good sunday afternoon watch on cable TV at home but definitely sitting in a movie hall a person will get eventually bored because of its slow pace and extra stretched out length. But I’ll still recommend to watch this movie once.
