''AAMCHI MUMBAI''

The city which some call it ’New York’ of India, some call it ’Hong Kong’ of India, many others call it ’Economic Capital’ of India, while, ’Asyis’ call it ’City of Dreams’; but, I have something different to say, I call it a city were a common man can’t sleep hungry but has to sleep in a house were sky is the roof.

LATE 1700’s

King Charles - II married the daughter of King of Portugal and in gift received 7-8 very very small islands of Mumbai were Marathi Fisherman’s used to reside.

British East India Company purchased the rights of Mumbai on lease and started developing the land in 1800’s by filling the sea between the islands. The Britisher’s weren’t able to pronounciate Indian names correctly such as they called Kolkata = Calcutta, Chennai = Madras, Vadodara = Baroda and so similarly Mumbai was being called Bombay by them and since then Mumbai became famous as Bombay.

With the help of Lord Dalhousie the city gave the country its first railway track were the train covered a distance of 50 kms. from Bombay to Thane and so did the Indian Railways saw its dawn.
