A Don Doctor: well, thats Munnabhai MBBS for u.
Munna Bhai MBBS, marking the directorial debut of Rajkumar Hirani,
comes as a breath of fresh air, in this era of cliched cinema, featuring
overtheatrical , melodramatic situations..man-woman getting soaked in rains,
man-woman prancing around trees, a notorious villain, a larger-than-life hero
and what follows is a plethora of seemingly bizarre huddle of gibberish jargon.
Arent we sick of all this mundane stuff?Just as u were complaining..
there is this movie Munnabhai MBBS, sneaking in as a surprise package
Without any more rambling, let me get the story straight to u.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Murli Prasad Sharma(Sanju Bhai) better known as Munna is a local goon in mumbai.
His job includes kaat daalna, haddi thodna and paisa vasooli besides other things. He is a don alright..but not exactly a big time baddie.A very conscientious bhai, this one.His dad , Hari Prasad Sharma( Sunil Dutt) and mom (Rohini Hattangidi) think that Munna is a doctor in mumbai( thats what he has told them).Things look dirty when Munna receives a telegram from his parents informing him that they are coming down to mumbai to visit him.Munna and his guys
transform their creepy dhobi ghat into a hospital, pronto.Circuit(Arshad Warsi)
plays Munnas loyal always-at-your-service buddy.Mom and dad arrive as
promised and are all praises for Munna, who has supposedly achieved
so much fame and glory. In the meantime, good old daddy meets an old acqaintance
Dr.Asthana (Boman Irani) and even fixes his son Munna with Chinky( Gracy Singh)
Dr.Asthanas lovely daughter. But all hell breaks loose, when Dr.Asthana
realises that Munna is not a doctor, but a local bhai..he heaps a
string of insults on Munna .His dad and mom return to their village,
heart broken and dejected. The drama must end now.But this is where the real story
kicks off!
Munna has a vision..that of becoming a doctor with a view to turning his dads
dream into reality. So the bhai eases his way into medical college, clearing the entrance test with top marks.(Watch the movie to find out how he does that!)Dr.Asthana happens to be the dean of the very university.and needless to say, he is hellbent upon expelling Munna for a lot many reasons.Munnas unconventional treatment techniques , his spontainety, the jaadu ki jhappi(Patch Adams style), which in his point of view, is the panacea to all illness, the intimacy , the reassuring No tension..apun hain nah?.. the smile and joy he infuses into everybody from the old complaining sweeper to the young cancer patient(Jimmy Shergill) , who is disgusted, he hasnt started living life as yet..are amazingly
crafted and they trigger the tear gland ocassionally too.
The movie has cartloads of rollicking moments. The scene where Munna shifts into hostel (the ragging scene, in particular has u in ruptures) his encounters with Dr.Asthana, the unwinding session at the dhobi ghat, , to name a few, are interestingly and hillariously done.

Coming to the cast, Sanjay Dutt steals the show.Playing a bhai comes
so naturally to him and he does his part with absolute finesse.
Speaking the Mumbhaiyo lingo in all its rustic beauty, this guy
has proved his mettle as an efficient comedian as well.Heard that
SRK was initially selected to play the title role.My Oh My!Where is
this industry headed?!Sanju Bhai is simply impeccable as the goon and
nobody else could have done better.
Arshad Warsi, , who plays Munnas sidekick, Circuit, springs a surprise.
I never imagined this guy could actually act.He shows perfect timing
in comedy and has done justice to his role..and definitey deserves
an applause.
Boman Irani, this is the man!The Trump card!As the jittery doctor and
the stern hapless principal, who is busy churning out plans and reasons
to expel Munna..u simply cannot brush him aside. With his weird ideas and
futile laughter therapy techniques and virtual eccentricity, he sure
cracks you up, each time he appears on screen.Class act!
Sunil Dutt radiates so much charisma..he is genuine, and has this
magnetic on-screen presence.Gracy Singh looks pretty and fits the role
of Chinky perfectly.Jimmy Shergil is satisfactory, as the loathing
cancer patient.
The characters have been etched out marvellously and every character
casts his mark and identity..and thats the best part of the movie.
Cinematography by Binod Pradhan is flawless and captures the moods and
milieux with nonchalance. The music( is there any?)by Anu Malik is
nothing much to write home about. On second thoughts, the songs are
unnecessary in the scheme of the screenplay, given the pace and theme
of the flick.

Munnabhai MBBS is an alluring comedy, not the usual loud comedy, we
are so accustommed to.The movie does have its sober moments, sentiments
et al, but they are not exaggerated and are depicted in simple, lucid,
natural style which is so bewitching, it gives you a hangover! So what if the movie defies all logic? The subject has been tackled delicately with a great deal of wit
and sensitivity, packed with a cute sense of humour..and the result
is awesome!
Bole tho, movie ek dhum jhakaas!!!
