Oceans of lush green tea beds with mountain fresh air and hilly wildlife makes Munnar a perfect getaway. In spite of all the virtues, this place hasnt been a full-fledged tourist spot, a blessing one may say. Munnar is a favourite place for honeymoon-goers because of its privacy and perfect romantic conditions.
Getting to Munnar is very easy with Cochin (being the nearest airport) just 130Km and Madurai just 145KM. KTDC buses and pre-paid cabs are easily available from Cochin and takes abt 3-3½ hours to reach. The best time to visit Munnar is between September and May, when its pretty cold and pleasant there.
Monsoons, from June to August, bring heavy rains. Being a hill station there are various hotels to choose from suiting your budget. Travelling in and around Munnar can be
done in a jeep or on a rented bicycle.
The 37000 acre tea plantations are owned by Tata Tea. Visiting the Tea Factory is an experience in itself. You will need special permission to do so which can be (not easily!!) obtained from the Regional Office at Munnar. Some other places to visit are Christ Church, Mount Carmel, Ramaswamy Iyer Headworks dam, Pothamedu, Pallivasal, The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary. Mattupetty Lake (13KM from Munnar) has activities like horse riding and speed boating. Top Station (40Km from Munnar) is a must-go place!
All in all, Munnar fits perfectly when we say its God own
creation.
