My Big Fat Greek Wedding is the kind of movie that you would want to catch after a stressfull week at work. It is relatively light on your brains, yet extremely entertaining, funny and above all a feel good movie. The movie is also very mainstream in its appeal and will actually be enjoyed by us Indians as one, we love weddings and two there is heaps of family and food in this feel good comedy.
As such the story revolves around Tula, a 30 year old unmarried Greek girl living with her traditional orthodox Greek family. Being not married and unattractive makes her the constant recipient of all the jokes and nagging from her father who wants to see her married. Working in her fathers Greek resteraunt ever since after school Tula has never had a life outside her Greek community until one day she decides to take life into her own hands. She also meets a guy with whom she falls in love with, however, she has to deal with her extended family most of all her father.
The story is one which an Indian audience has witnessed many times before but there is plenty of freshness in the movie to overcome this limitation. The lead players do a fabulous job but is the colorful Greek supporting charectors that really make the movie an absolute riot. Fortunately, for us the movie does not get into melodramatic and preachy mode and mantains its light hearted and feel good tone through out at the same time without being overtly frivalous.
Overall, My Big Fat greek wedding is definately highly reccomended and is a movie that can be enjoyed by just about everyone.
