It didn’t take me long to conjure up a list of my favorite websites. I do surf extensively but they are only a handful of sites that I repeatedly visit. So here we go.in no particular order:
Yahoo.com
Yahoo is probably the only site in the world that I regularly pay homage to! It offers a host of services which includes messenger, greetings, search, personalized webpage construction(Geocities), photos, email…the list is virtually endless. The best service that Yahoo has to offer(in my opinion) is email.
Unlike other popular email sites, yahoo email does not take an eternity to download and has copious features such as calendar, notepad, import contacts, search mail, automatic message response, reminders, color change…yeah you can also personalize your mail with colors and themes! Silly feature, if you ask me…but I’ll leave that to your disposition.
SoYouWanna.com
This site provides you with answers to all sorts of questions related to entertainment, travel, technology, etiquette, sports, money, health etc. “I have seen a zillion such sites”, I hear you say. But don’t go as yet!
What makes this site interesting is that detailed information on diverse issues varying from bizarre to habitual is provided in a very witty fashion. Not the usual bookish-jargon you find on most sites, but with a touch of humor, almost cynical! Most MS readers would enjoy it.
Google.com
The best search engine I have come across. The unique feature here is the Google toolbar. It takes a few seconds to install and once done it appears along with the Internet Explorer toolbar.
You can conveniently search from any webpage, hence eliminating the need to get back to the Google home page for a new search. Needless to add that the toolbar comes along with a quite a few great features.
You can download the Google toolbar at: toolbar.google.com
GoDubai.com
I am a Dubaiite, hence this site appeals to me. Godubai is the first community website in the UAE. GoDubai offers the latest updates on events taking place in the UAE, news, job vacancies, movies currently playing in town, contests, GCC published magazines online, a panel of online experts, free fax facility and lots more.
If you do plan to visit Dubai, then make sure you add GoDubai to your “To-Do” list. You can gather all the crucial tourist related information here such as visa rules, hotel bookings, shopping guides, tips, places to visit, restaurants, tour operators, car rentals, UAE culture etc.
HTMLGoodies.com
Kick-start your way into the world of web programming!
I would highly recommend this site for all new and intermediate web developers and designers.
I hate textbook language, they are incredibly dry and dreary. Hence when I came across this site I was thrilled. HTMLgoodies is packed with fun to learn, methodical and well written programming languages that does not dissuade you with a knotty lingo nor does it put you off to sleep.
HowStuffWorks.com
Ever pondered over how credit cards work or how batteries function? What lies inside those radar detectors which flashes at you(and of course also generously endows you with speeding tickets!) when you are zooming down the road? Why is that Plasma display televisions have become the latest fad? How lock picking works?
Stop pondering then! Check out HowStuffWorks.com
It is a fascinating site that delivers information about the workings of everyday items
A feast for inquisitive minds(including mine!).
Oxymoronlist.com
I came across this site a couple of days back. It is a collection of a massive list of oxymorons, i.e. paradoxical or contradictory words. For example: pretty ugly, awfully nice, all alone(Isn’t English a funny language?). The list is amusing and it made me chuckle! Hence listed!
My favorite oxymoron: Microsoft Works!
Rottentomatoes.com
This is a fine site to check out critical reviews on movies(English only). The reviews are written by USA’s leading film critics, both online and print media. Each of the movies are rated with the “Tomatometer”. A good review is symbolized with a fresh tomato and a bad review with a rotten tomato. So, spare yourself the torture of a rotten movie, check out the review here first!
Onlineconversion.com
A neat site that provides instant conversions of units. A very handy utility, with an impressive list of 5000 units. Quite a few pf which are unheard of(at least for me), such as erc, fifth, jigger.
My favorite is hogshead!
There is also a host of other interesting stuff like calculating your blood-alcohol content, estimating the world population, converting your name to the Morse code, determining your age in dog years.
Mouthshut.com
I am hopelessly hooked onto this one!
Although I am a recent addition to Mouthshut.com, it has become an indispensable part of my life!
Need I say more?
