The Southern Darbar - Mysore Palace

Mysore. the former capital of the then Mysore province during the British era is a wonderful getaway place for the history lovers and shopaholics.situated barely 150 kms from Bangalore(now Bengaluru), it is well connected by air road and railways to all major cities in Karnataka and other parts of India. The Silk sarees of Mysore are renounced all over the globe for its elegance, but the main reason one must visit Mysore is the Mysore Palace.

Situated at the heart of the city, this palace was the prominence during the olden days in the entire Deccan Plateau. Built by the Wodeyars of Mysore, it still stands tall today reminding us of the engineering and architectural might of our ancestors. On a personal note I visited the place in November during Diwali but the best time to visit is during Dussehera. Bear it in mind that you plan your trip well in advance because the number of people visiting the city increaes in multiples. Only a particular section of the palace is open to the general public and with an entrance fee of Rs.40, this place is definitely worth the money and time spent.

The palace was built during the British era. Over the decades it has undergone a lot of cosmetic changes such as electricity bulbs fans lifts etc. Inspite of all this the true structural integrity of the palace is still the same from the floor to the walls to the ceilings.everything is as it was back in the day. The Darbars both public and private are phenomenal with exquisite art and design. It honestly reminds you of those old movies of the great kings. Apart from that the decoratives paintings and other items used by the royal family is on display for the public. Also the palace authorities have introduced audio guides which is very helpful for those who are unable to find a guide during rush hour or those who want to avoid a squabble with those guys.

Overall it is a wonderful experience and if your going to Mysore for the first time make sure you try out the local delicacies the handicrafts from various emporiums. The place is absolutely scenic and for those photography lovers don’t forget your DSLR cameras for capturing those perfect moments around the palace. The only bummer I’d say is that you’ve to keep your phones off and photography is prohibited inside the palace. Apart from that all its a place worth visiting. Also once you get there there’s always time for a getaway to  Coorg or Ooty. So I’d suggest you all plan it out before hand and enjoy your holidays.:-)
