My 87 Paise

Dear Mr. Manoj Night Shyamalan,

I guess you might have already heard this, but there is yet another blood n’ gore flick enthused from your thriller Sixth Sense, this one thankfully not as awful as the other remakes. Unlike your original story, this one revolves around an Indian girl in London who looses her eyesight and parents in a tragic road accident as a kid. Into her late teens she gets a cornea transplant from a deceased Indian girl with eerie ramifications. Yes, her sight is restored but she sees more than she should which includes dead people, and premonitions of awaiting devastation around her.

I know what you are thinking: there is so many catastrophes happening twenty four hours a day so does the ill-fated girl see anything else? Good question, but should we be questioning the logic of a horror flick? How come all the hospital staff in London speak Hindi, you ask? Well it could be sheer coincidence, or perhaps it was Southall? How come the young lassie doesn’t have a British accent? Well, let’s not go there. I know of many Indians’ who have never left it’s shores but speak in a British accent.

Unlike in your masterpiece, the young woman here goes in search of the source of these weird happenings which takes her to Rajasthan. Yes, sir, one of the areas you missed out when your aliens attacked India in Signs. Coincidently she finds this mentally challenged kid who tells her everything she needs to know about the source of her new found vision.

She eventually helps her savior to attain nirvana, and returns to London. Why didn’t she take back her destitute mother who she took care of for weeks, you ask? Well, just because she is a heroine doesn’t mean she is charitable. Plus I don’t think you should try to add logic to every aspect of the movie. Did we question you when the aliens allergic to water decided to attack a planet which is three fourth water?

Special effects in Bollywood movies has come a long way, and none better than in Naina. Some of the spooky scenes had the audience jumping from their seats. Unfortunately the scary scenes were predictable, and came at regular foreseeable intervals. Thankfully the movie has no song sequences; yeah, the spooks would have added a new dimension to some of the colorfully choreographed ’’run between the trees’’ sequences, but nay. There is absolutely no doubt that Naina is one of the better Bollywood horror flicks of recent years, and some of the screenplay is of international standards. Even you, sir, would be impressed.

Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, you must be rather pleased with all the Bollywood remakes. But you can rest easy, even Bollywood would not dare try to remake your remaining movies: Unbreakable, Signs and The Village - We don’t get inspired by turkeys you see.

Sincerely,

Atul
