Namdroling monastery located in Bylakuppe a part of Coorg or Kodagu district is a scintillating place that gives us a glimpse of Buddhist traditions and their culture here in Karnataka barely a few kilometres from Kushalnagar and around 85 kilometres from Mysore city, this place is a settlement of Tibetian monks and other people.
Located in a scenic environment, this monastery is architecturally sound and once you enter the place you are often greeted by smiling monks and the sacred hymns and prayers offered by the monks in Pali language. Everything inside this place feels different, from the floor to the pillars the walls and the ceilings.all engraved with paintings of their gods and each wall painting has its own story.
The entrance to the temple has 2 lion statues in a guarding stance beside the stairs. The main temple itself is huge with not a nook left untouched by artwork. The statue of Buddha in the meditation position looks marvellous and one can offer prayers if they wish to.
Apart from the temple, the prayer hall is a must visit there. One will definitely feel relaxed and calm after visiting the prayer hall. Apart from all this we have small shops selling traditional items which you will normally find in other places such as in Sikkim darjeeling.so you may feel its overpriced but to be honest its definitely worth the money they ask for it. Location wise it is well connected by road and a great weekend getaway if you are planning a Coorg trip with friends or family. If youre planning to stay then the best thing to do would be to stay at Kushalnagar as it is the centre point for other places to see in Coorg.
Overall its a wonderful place, and yes do try to visit the place when they have their festivals as it becomes a totally different and lively place during those times.
