Natsamrat - a regional movie made in Marathi is an example of those very few good films made in Marathi which have the ability to compete with the best film standards.
What does this movie has to become such a great film? Nothing - A simple real life story of an actor, played by another great actor of Indian cinema - Nana Patekar! That’s it and they have turned this opportunity into giving us a big hit!
The movie is based on a real life story of a leading super star of Marathi drama - Ganpat "Appa" Belwalkar, who enthralled the audience with his acting, so much so that he attained the the highest place as an actor and being called the King of Theater Art!(Natsamrat).
However, the movie is not only about his journey to success, it’s the story about how, a one-time superstar, whose shows were super hit and people waited in long queues to watch them, had to live as a pauper on the streets - disowned by his own kids, during the last chapter in his real life stage.
Its also about how his better half, his beloved wife, supported him and stood by his side, throughout his life, both in high times and the bad times. Its also about, how his good old friend, knowing that he himself is as good actor as him, still encouraged and supported him always and applauded his success with large heart!
We almost choked while watching this film. Nana Patekar has lived this character and he has brought the man - Appa Belwalker, back alive on the screen.
Everything is so good about this movie, direction, screen-play, characters, everything. This is a must-watch film and I would rate it as one of the excellent films I have watched off lately.
Even if you do not understand the language - I would recommend you should watch this movie and you would love it.(There are also english subtitles).
