Led by singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain, Nirvana is one of the many underground bands that sprang up in the late 80s to test mainstream tolerance for alternative music. The band started in Washington state and started off by performing in local clubs and travelling the usual circuit of bars around the state and later on the country. Their first attempt at a record Bleach recieved a cold shoulder by the industry. However, their popularity was gaining amongst their live audiences and soon enough Nirvana started Opening for the Big Bands.
Nirvanas undistinguished 1989 debut, Bleach, relied on warmed-over Seventies metal riffs, but the thrashing Nevermind boasted an adrenalized pop heart and incomparably superior material. Cued in with occasional (and presumably intentional) tape errors, most of the songs – like On a Plain, Come as You Are and Territorial Pissings – exemplify the bands skill at inscribing subtlety onto dense, noisy rock. At the albums stylistic extremes, Something in the Way floats a translucent cloud of acoustic guitar and cello, while Breed and Stay Away race flat-out, the latter ending in an awesome meltdown rumble.
Too often, underground bands squander their spunk on records theyre not ready to make, then burn out their energy and inspiration with uphill touring. Nevermind found Nirvana at the crossroads – scrappy garageland warriors setting their sights on a land of giants.
Nevermind propelled Nirvana into the big league and they suddenly became the attraction instead of the opening act.
Something else besides the alternative music that Nirvana offered was Curt. With Nevermind Curt turned into an over-night celebrity. The poor guy never could figure out how to handle it and ultimately killed himself. The band could never be re-surrected after that.
