My mother and I decided we need to get away, so we elected New Hampshire. Being from Southeastern, Connecticut, it would only be a few hours to get to New Hampshire so this is where we decided to go.
We figured there would be plenty to do and there are no taxes in New Hampshire. We hopped in the car, having only a vague idea where we wanted to go when we got to New Hampshire.
Once we got through all of the construction from the highways, we eventually made it into Nashua, New Hampshire, around 12:00. We thought, this was great, it only took about two hours to get to New Hampshire from Connecticut. We really wanted to go to shopping malls and find local attractions, so we stopped at the local rest stop.
I had remembered going to Clarks Trading Post, where there were bears and gift shops we would enjoy. We picked up a few pamphlets and took a chance and headed for the White Mountains. We figured, there would be plenty to do and hopefully some shopping outlets we go stop by at.
As we drove on, we began noticing trees, after trees after trees. We barely saw anything that resembled a mall, yet alone a store. As we got closer and closer to the White Mountains, I did not notice any grocery stores either.
We were hungry by the time we got to the White Mountains so we stopped at Indian Head Resort. We had lunch for a little under twenty dollars, two sodas and two chicken salads. For this price, I would not recommend going here. My mother had two rotten tomatoes in her salad and we each had only about four pieces of chicken on top of our salads.
We went into the gift shop at Indian Resort and I bought a small cedar medieval box. We then headed on our way, in search of a place to stay overnight.
We passed, Clarks Trading Post, not even stopping do to exhaustion, we said we would go back later but never did. After passing Comfort Inn & Suites a couple of times, we finally asked for directions on where it was only to realize that we had been going by it on several occasions. They kept it well hidden, but thats not because it was worth being hidden, it just was poorly laid out on where it was.
We decided to get a room at the Comfort Inn & Suites for $90. It had an indoor pool and hot tub. The one disappointing factor that I will consider next time is that it did not also have an outdoor swimming pool.
As we unpacked our things in our hotel room and took a brief break, we noticed that the room seemed to be pretty clean. I would later learn that my sheets had been put on backwards and there was a plastic cup from the last guests underneath my bed.
We decided to head back out and find some shopping places and something to eat. We found a great gift shop behind our hotel that sold a lot of train items. We then proceeded down the street in search of shopping, only to be disappointed that everything that might have been something worth checking out closed at 5:00 p.m.
We were starting to get hungry, we stopped at this Seafood Restaurant. The waitress sat us in two very comfortable chairs by a fireplace. She then immediately brought us some fresh bread and it was so good, she brough us some more. This was one of the more exciting highlights of the whole trip. My mother ordered the lobster and I ordered the lobster and fillet mignon. It was delicious. When we got our bill it came to a little over $53, not too bad for a nice relaxing meal.
After doing a little bit more driving and taking a few tourist pictures, we headed back to the hotel. We walked by the swimming pool and hot tub only to find about a dozen kids playing in the pool and hot tub. We decided if we waited until around 9:00 p.m. the parents would gather their children and take them back to their rooms to go to bed.
Around 9:00 p.m. we headed down to the indoor pool and hot tub. To our demise, we discovered more than twelve children now, and a few children in the hot tub. I always thought you had to be a certain age to be in the hot tub, but I guess I was wrong. To make matters worse, the were diving in the pools and doing a lot of splashing. The sign clearly stated no diving.
My mother and I decided we were not going to let these kids rule the hot tub, so we slid right in. They immediately got out when we got in, but a few thought they would be cute and join us. After we were finished going in the hot tub, we decided we were going in the pool no matter what. We did, but after a little while got out when one of the kids was spitting hot tub water into the pool. Management finally came over to take care of the diving and splashing, but by then it was too late and it had spoiled our fun.
The next day, we decided to head back home a different way, Route 3. We wished that we had come up this way, because there were more gift shops and attractions. There were many more hotels and motels to choose from as well. One of the best stops on the way home was in Meredith, New Hampshire. In Meredith, New Hampshire, we found a great Christmas shop filled with three levels of fun Christmas and Halloween decorations, called The Christmas Loft.
It took a lot longer to get home than it did to get there. We managed to find a lot of the shopping centers that we were looking for going down Route 3, then taking Route 93. This trip was not a total disaster, we did manage to have fun.
