I would give the Nokia 2100 a 100/100 as an entry level handset.
Its great for newbies or those who are just looking for a basic phone.
Of course, if you are looking for the high tech, hi fi newest technology and feature laden camera-cum-digital diary-cum-computer-cum-gamestation-cum-artistic masterpiece and a phone maybe...then I suggest you stop reading this review because 2100 is definitely not for you :)
I used to own a motorola t180( Which most of my friends thought I had dug up from some ancient site in an archaeological excavation) and I wanted to get a new mobile which atleast looked better than my moto and the nokia 3310 (The ultimate entry level handset). As expected, most of my friends told me to go for 3310 only and then!, suddenly, one fine afternoon the suns sparkling rays filled up my life ...err..room and like the angel Amans entry into Nainas life, 2100 came into mine (ok! Not directly into my life, it entered the neighbourhood cellphone shop first)
It had all the features I wanted:
It looked sleek, small and trendy. It wasnt expensive and it wasnt bulky at all! I bought it for around 6400 in May, its price must have gone down to 5500 (?) Im not sure about that.
And theres a variety of options available for color..from the horribly boring dull grey to a very halloweeny orange. Mines shocking bright red. hehe. ( I am completely aware of the fact that I have an amazing choice in colors. Thank you. )
It has an awesome awesome white backlight which can easily double up as a torch during the surprisingly regular powercuts in Delhi. And provides a much needed break from all the walking on the blue side. (nokia 8250?)
Its phonebook doesnt have great memory though, only 100, but theres always more memory on the simcard, that usually suffices...unless you are the popular Miss Kareina Kapoor of your school obviously :)
There are the usual features like the calculator, stopwatch, countdown timer and Picture editor. And for all the ringtone mozarts, theres the composer. (Its a totally different matter that I myself have never ever been able to compose anything that even slightly resembles music in any way)
You cannot send ringtones to other cell phones though.
There are the usual 3 games: Snake II, Space Impact and Link5. And you cant download any more. But personally, I dont mind, A simple game like Snake is enough to occupy my attention. (Blame it on my microscopic brain capacity)
You can also set reminders for yourself. Most people use it remind themselves of important jobs, I use it to remind myself of important jokes to tell my friends.
Theres also an alarm clock in the phone. I know this is a standard feature of nokia phones, but when you buy a nokia after having owned a moto T180 for 3 yrs, you learn how to value these little things in life.
You can download and save 7 ringtones on this phone, along with the 35 standard ones. There are 3 animated screensavers apart from the usual clipart stuff, and theres a very funky feature called rhythmic backlight alert which I like a lot. The backlight dances along with your ringtone beats. (wow! sequel to Jhankaar beats)
Though for Rs. 6400, you expect more stuff, For Rs. 5500, I guess these features are okay. The features that this phone does NOT have are:
It doesnt have WAP (3610)
Doesnt have Java
No connectivity to your computer (3650)
No camera (7250)
Cannot download wallpapers (samsung c100)
No radio (8310)
No MMS,
No colours.
Ok, I think I better stop now, because even though I recommend this phone, I am getting the feeling that after reading this review, you might end up NOT liking it.
