I bought Nokia Lumia 520 Red color from Flipkart for Rs.8944 with 6 month EMI option. I had to follow up on daily basis to get the mobile delivered on 10th day. However the packet delivered without any damage and was brand new. Since the phone was for my wife and she wanted red color, I had to go with an online store. None of the stores in my locality has red color in stock.
Since Lumia 520 requires micro simcard I had to cut old sim to micro size using scissors. Otherwise set up was very easy and it requires a windows account. First thing we noticed is touch response, it’s flawless. The home screen has variable size tiles and resembles Windows 8 startup screen.
Menu is just like classic Windows Start menu – a single column list of applications with small icons. It just grows down as more applications installed. The audio and music player is average - nothing much to write, connectivity is very good – both WiFi and network. Data transfer while downloading music and applications from Nokia store was pretty good. Browsing speed through WiFi also was very fast. GPS also is good along with Here Drive application.
Searching address book made easy by index on starting letter. A long touch on indexed letter will open an index screen of all alphabets and alphabet is highlighted if there is a contact name starting with that alphabet. The same feature is available while searching songs.
A single tap on the left arrow icon at bottom of the screen will close current application and will take you to previous screen. A long touch will allow you to switch between multiple screens.
Kid’s Corner is a very useful feature which will restrict kids to use only allowed apps. But sometimes found that accessing Kid’s Corner also requires inputting passcode.
Pre-installed MS Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) is also a point to mention
A let down is absence of FM radio. Also, Camera is not great and without LED flash forget taking pictures in low light. However apps like Cinemagraph (a picture with motion) and Smart Shoot are interesting. One issue observed is that sometimes volume change buttons become ineffective while playing music. Restarting phone however solves this issue.
Overall a great entry level smart phone worth for the money paid.
