N97: Worth Buying After The Software Update v2.0?

I bought the Nokia N97 in June 2009 for Rs 34, 000 in New Delhi, being the Nokia patron that I am. Have stuck by Nokia Phones throughout & the upgrade from the N95 was totally justified due to the N97 being a Nokia Touch device. The N97 came pre-loaded with the software v10 which was a disappointment to be quite frank. Slow, Buggy software, hanging issues, non - responsive touch. You name it, had all those gliches that you don’t expect in such a premium device.

I slowly started contemplating selling off the thing to get a new iPhone. But then, v11 was available and I updated instantly to find that a few of these problems were addressed. Decided to hold on. Again, Nokia came out with the v12 around July-Aug period and the new firmware addressed MOST OF THESE ISSUES to my relief. But still, it did not feel just right. I mean the phone just did not pack a punch that some other fancy phones had. That is TILL NOW. Recently Nokia released the v2.0 software on 27th October in India and yes it is a breath of fresh life for the N97.

Instantly, I could see a host of new features instrumental in reinventing the device from scratch. It feels much more powerful & productive all of a sudden. Here are a few things that you will find on v2.0:

  1. Kinetic Scrolling: A feature like the iPhone, where smooth scrolling is available in Contacts, Menu, Messages, Applications, Web Browser etc. 2. Much More Stability & Performance Boost.3. Improvements to the Camera & the QWERTY Keyboard. 4. Increased free memory.5. Music Player has album art along with the song in Track List.

To sum it up, I now see my N97 as a device which I have always dreamed of to be like. No more do I have to worry about hanging issues, battery running out prematurely and Slow Response. So if you’re an owner or a prospective user thinking of buying this phone, don’t hesitate. Not anymore:)Make sure you have the latest software for your N97. You can check your current software by pressing*#0000# on your home screen. Download the Software Updater from Nokia India’s Website.

Cheers!
