What do I say about the most talked movie of the year? What do I say about the movie with the biggest(with 2, 000 prints) day-and-date international release in Bollywood history ? What do I say about the movie with the highest number of stars? What do I say about the unbelievable things that happen in the movie?
The equation is
Star Power+ Romance+ Masala+ Fantasy+ Songs+ Comedy - sixth sense= OM SHANTI OM
So one should leave his/her brain and logical thinking back home before going to the theatre. But the movie guarantees a great entertainment for 2 hours and 47 minutes in 18 reels.
Story: As we know the story line deals with re-incarnation. OM Prakash(Shahrukh) is a junior artist in the 70s and dreams of becoming a super star and live life king size. His is in love and admires the superstar actress SHANTI priya(Deepika). He befriends her by saving her life from a fire accident and she likes him. What OM(rest of the world too) is not aware of is that SHANTI is secretly married to Mukesh(Arjun Rampal - Bad guy in the movie) and is pregnant with his child. OM overhears Mukesh and SHANTI having a serious argument on Mukesh(who is soon to be married to rich Mittals daughter) accepting SHANTI. OM is heart broken but still feels happy for her when Mukesh agrees to marry Shanti. But Mukesh Kills SHANTI by setting up the OM SHANTI OM SETS on fire with her inside. OM tries to save her but gets beaten up and finally dies without saving SHANTIs life.
OM is reborn as OM KAPOOR(OK) as a son of superstar Rajesh Kapoor, He lives life King Size and enjoys superstar status and is a spoiled actor(comes late to the sets, changes scripts, locations, frequent packup etc). He happens to visit the burned down sets of OM SHANTI OM and remembers about his earlier birth. He finds a look alike of SHANTI(SANDY - Deepkia) and tries to scare Mukesh and make him confess about the murder he committed 30 years ago. How the climax goes and the movie ends is something that is to be watched and so let me stop here.
CAST Performance: The entire cast overacts throughout the first half and most of the second half. May be I would say, this is what the movie is all about. We are expected to be in a fantasy land and hence overacting is permitted.totally Filmy. The scenes between OM and SHANTI are admirable and good to watch. I would say they had made fun of almost every actor in the industry. Shahrukh fits in the ultra filmy role and does that with ease.SRK rocks asusual. There is no point in comparing his performance with that in Chak De or Swades or any other movie because this is what OSO requires. Good to see a new sexy Shahrukh with his 6 pack abs; though this gives the movie an interesting aspect, we still cannot make him fit into the body builder actors group. Deepika is pretty, charming, good in the dance sequences and fits in the role perfectly. This is the best bollywood opening any actress could dream of and the actress has done a good job with grace. The overacting mother(Kiron Kher) and friend(Shreyas) along with Shahrukh make a funny team. The movie has a handsome and talented bad guy Arjun and he has done justice to his role.
MUSIC & VISUALS & OTHERS: The music is impressive and the sound track goes well with the story line. The songs remind us of the yesteryear tunes with well written lyrics(Javed Akhtar, Vishal & Kumaar). Each song is different and the music directors(Vishal - Sekhar) have done a fantastic job. In a nutshell, we could say the songs are interesting and already a super-hit. In reality, while few songs excel; few just meet the expectations but worth listening. The songs were choreographed with energy and colors but the beats and the rhythm of music were not well synchronized in few dance sequences. The song with 31 stars(Deewangi Deewangi) was interesting in the sense it had many stars but the choreography didnt meet the expectations. The costumes look bright and classy in Manikandans wide screen camera. The art direction (Sabu Cyril) and the sets failed to make a major mark after watching the fabulous sets(Vaaji Vaaji, Sahara songs) of Shivaji, the boss.
DIRECTION AND SCRIPT: Farah Khan will be acknowledged as the best “masala - commercial ” film director of Bollywood. She makes big budget entertaining movies that are totally a good investment for the producer. But, "How long could she continue this?" will still remain a question. The movie had few well written dialogues(Mayur Puri) and funny scenes. The movies slows down during the second half and the climax could have been handled better. But the bottomline is Farah keeps the audience awake and this is best aspect for any movie.
OVERALL: OSO is a complete entertainment package for all movie lovers with stars, songs, fun, romance, masala and fantasy. It takes us to the dreamy land of Bollywood in the 70s and rides us to the present as well. "Picture abhi Bhaki Hai Mere Dhost" will be the best remembered dialogue of the movie.
As the movie says, "FOR SOME DREAMS ONE LIFETIME IS NOT ENOUGH".
