Well, the first word that comes to mind is “master piece”. I mean how often you get to see a movie which is so realistic. Every frame in the movie is there because story demands that and not because audience would love to see that. Vishal Bhardwaj has proved his metal one more time by not falling for any commercial aspect of the movie making and sticking to his guns. He definitely deserves a big round of applause for his style of movie making.
Coming to performances Saif Ali khan and Konkana Sen Sharma top my list of favorites. I mean the performance from these 2 was brilliant in every scene they had. Saif has come a long way from “Dil Chahat Hai” and coming to Konkana , all I want to say is “She is the Shabana Azmi in the making..” . Kareena didn’t have much dialogues but she deserves 10 on 10 for her outstanding facial expressions in the last scene with Ajay Devgan. I think this is the first time I appreciated her as an actress and not a show piece. Ajay Devgan, Nasserudin Shah, Bipasha basu and Vivek Oberio did justice to their characters.
Language of the movie was difficult to understand as it was the purest form of UP state language. It takes guts to keep the original dialect of the state language, when you know the movie will be released world wide. That’s were Vishal as a director is different from the rest of the lot. But, this decision had a disadvantage as not everyone could enjoy the great dialogues of the movie which was written by Vishal himself.
Finally, though the movie was well directed, it was slow paced and very serious. So, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the masses didn’t gel with the movie. What’s surprising is that the movie is doing better business in UK and US then India. All said and done, the movie did fall short on the entertainment values. May be next time Vishal should try meaningful cinema laced with entertainment. After all, at the end of the day we make movies for audience and we should try to reach wider audience without compromising on the quality of the movie.
