I was raised in Niagara Fall, Ontario and one of the reasons I left the area was the tourist. I must say though, the tourists came for a good reason. It took until I aged a little and had children before I regained appreciation for this place I called home.
The wonderful, world renown, Niagara (Horseshoe) Falls, or as we call it, simply The Falls, leaves one speechless, peering over the edge at this natural beauty. Its a mixture of power, beauty and mystery all wrapped up in one.
There is no ideal time of year to visit this amazing wonder. The reason being it holds out a different form of wonder and amazement year round. Summer lends an air of refreshment and extra amounts of mist coming off the brink of The Falls. Colored lights reflect off the water at night giving added beauty. Spring is a time to see the miles of new growth along the stretch of roadway. Autumn gives way to the bonus of the famous changing colors of leaves, seen in upper North America. Trees of brilliant red, orange, gold, brown and the evergreen trees tie into the scenery. Winter is a whole new array of wonder. The ice and snow show a magical side to this natural wonder.
From November to February, you can visit this magical world of Christmas lights, displays and characters every night of the week. Sheer beauty with a childlike touch.
You can interact with this natural wonder by simply looking over the edge, hiking the gorge, dining in the rotating restaurant over looking The Falls, taking a trip on the boat called The Maid of the Mist, riding the aero-car across the gorge, a helicopter ride over the top of The Falls, a long car drive along the parkway and even an adventure under The Falls in rain coats and rubber boots.
The well known Clifton Hill area hosts many museums, mini-golf, food areas and even a large Casino. Theres Marineland to watch the wild life and sea animals and restaurants, with everything from fast food to fine dining. Theres also theatres, night-clubs, go-karts, fishing, boating and floral gardens of plenty in the area. A fairly new addition to the area is the Butterfly Conservatory.
Hotels come in a variety of styles as well. You can stay in a modest priced hotel/motel with very clean accommodations, Bed and Breakfast rooms, camp grounds, right up to elegance at its finest. Shopping is of plenty and its only a hop-skip and a jump to cross over to the American side to shop. There are 4 bridges connecting the New York state from the Niagara Region. Crime is at a minimal and Ontario is well-known for its cleanliness.
Niagara Falls has seen many a daredevil challenge their fate with feats of going over the Falls in a barrel (some lived, yet many died trying) or tight-roping high above its powerful movement. Even the famous Marilyn Monroe did a movie about our famous little corner of the world called Niagara (she stayed in the Skyline Brock Hotel during the shooting of the film). Superman with Christopher Reeves was also done in Niagara Falls. This is truly a place for singles, honeymooners (The Honeymoon Capital of the world) families, student trips and seniors.
All are welcome....... and from around the world they come!
