If you experience a sensation in your teeth when you eat ice-cream or when you sip hot coffee, then you are experiencing the first signs of tooth decay. Our teeth is protected by a thin, but strong covering known as enamel. Now even though enamel are strong they can wear away if not taken proper care of. Enamel does not contain living cells i.e once damaged they wont be self repaired. So wouldnt it be better to be safe than sorry. Here in I list some measures to keep your teeth solid and away from problems.
Keep your mouth salivated: The saliva in our mouth contains calcium and phosphate which helps our enamel stay strong, our teeth is more prone to attack of germs when our mouth is ‘Dry’. In order to prevent such a condition we should to chew our food slowly and properly which would keep our mouth much more salivated.
Avoid brushing after swimming: Studies have shown that the chlorine in pools are very harmful for our enamel, they tend to soften our enamel when we tend to swim for long hours, brushing your teeth in such a condition would be no less than ‘suicidal’.
Stay away from Soda and soft drinks: Now this is a remedy most of us know about, but hardly does anyone practice. Studies have shown soda, due to its highly acidic nature can decay our enamel at 10 times the normal rate of decay. Avoiding it totally may be impossible, but we should take care to rinse our mouth properly after consuming it. And totally avoid it if we see the first signs of decay.
Use Straw: Now this relates to the above remedy, Most of us wont give up on soft-drinks so easily, so if we are taking it why not in an alternative manner i.e ‘Saanp bhi marr jaye aur lathi bhi na tute’.The use of straw would help the drink to directly reach our throat rather than come in contact with our teeth and harm it in any manner.
Milk and cheese: We usually consume a lot of acidic stuff in our meals, which tends to effect our enamel, to cancel out this we can drink a glass of milk before or after meals, we can also take a piece of cheese as a substitute.
Drink lots of water: As mentioned above, we need to keep our mouth salivated, what best way in order to do that then drink lots of water at regular intervals throughout the day.
Conclusion: Its not too impossible to protect one of our most gifted assets, so lets not neglect and find ourselves in despairingly artificial and tasteless world.Better be safe than sorry.!
