A must for all WANNABE THIEVES!!

When one delivers a paisa-vasool entertainer like Khosla Ka Ghosla, you do have a lot of expectations when his second film is all set to release. Unfortunately, ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye’ fails to live upto its expectations. Director Dibakar Banerjee could have made this film as interesting and entertaining as Bunty Aur Babli and Bluffmaster (which also had a similar plot) but he doesn’t succeed 100%!

The story of the movie: Lucky (Abhay Deol) is a rising chor in Delhi. He has a unique modus operandi and has the ability to steal anything from a particular house right under the noses of their owners! He knew no fear and that was his greatest strength. The film traces the life of Lucky, from his teenaged days till he turn 31, and throws light on the good and bad times he faces.

‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye’ starts off quite uniquely. In fact, some of the scenes in the beginning were hilarious. Actually, the entire first half is thoroughly entertaining and funny with not a single dull moment! The way Lucky would entre into anyone’s houses and steal their music systems, TV, Mercedes, dog (!!) etc brings the house down! Also, Lucky fooling the police is applauding!

Another plus-point of ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye’ is that it has a North-Indian feel to it, since the entire film is based in Delhi! That makes the film a little more likeable, in my opinion! Dibakar Banerjee’s Khosla Ka Ghosla also had this feel which had helped the film!

However, the film has equal flaws too! The biggest problem with the film is that it hardly has any story! Things begin to get repetitive, especially in the 2nd half. Even the ups and downs Lucky has to face in the 2nd hour weren’t interesting at all. Secondly, Paresh Rawal has three different roles in the film, which in my opinion was unnecessary. Maybe there was some significance behind it but unfortunately, audiences weren’t able to understand it.

And lastly, the purpose of the film is puzzling! The film glorifies robbery. In fact, all wannabe thieves shouldn’t miss this film for anything!

The film belongs to Abhay Deol! He was complete natural and performed as per his character demanded. He also stayed in Delhi for many days to get his performance right and that’s why his accent, mannerisms seemed perfect.

Abhay have always done out-of-the-box films. Barring Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd (in which his performance was okay), he did a great job in each of his films! And ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye’ is another feather in Abhay’s cap! Kudos to Abhay Deol!

Paresh Rawal played each of the three roles convincingly. The funniest was the one in the beginning (as Lucky’s father). Manu Rishi as Bangali (Lucky’s friend) was perfect and also added to the humour of the film! His best scene was when a silly villager asks him “Bus depot jaayegi?” and Bengali replies “Depot mein aag lag gayi hai!”

Neetu Chandra was first-rate. Richa Chadda as Dolly was excellent. Archana Puran Singh and Anurag Chadda were good. Manjot Singh as young Lucky was as good as Abhay Deol! He was terrific! Others were okay.

Sneha Khanwalkar’s music was okay, but suited the north-Indian mood of the film! Best song was undoubtedly the title track! Kartik Vijay’s cinematography was also in sync with the situations and mood of the film.

Manu Rishi, who played the role of Bangali, has also written the dialogues, which were excellent and one of the plus point of the film! The satirical funny dialogues went in favour of the film!

Urvi Jumekar and Dibakar Banerjee wrote the story and screenplay. There wasn’t much story in the film, but the screenplay was quite engrossing especially in the first half. Dibakar Banerjee didn’t create the same magic like Khosla Ka Ghosla but still, his direction was completely disastrous. His direction was novel at times which made for a refreshing experience. Also, the robberies made by Lucky throughout the film looked real and believable. However, the film also became confusing at many times. Mr Banerjee, deliver something much better next time!

Some of the best scenes of the film:

  1. Lucky at the age of 15

  2. Lucky at Chadda’s house (funny!)

  3. Lucky and Dolly at the latter’s house

  4. Lucky stealing the home system from a teenaged girl’s bedroom (quite witty!)

  5. The intermission point (brilliant!)

  6. Lucky and his encounters with dogs!

  7. Lucky at the police station

  8. Lucky calling 100 from his house

  9. The final scene

On the whole, ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye’ is a good entertainer, which could had been outstanding. It has no story and turns confusing at times. However, the film has some great humorous moments, which will stay in your mind for a long time. A must for all thieves!
