A breath of fresh air!

Well I’ve been away from MS for such a long time (3 months wow, see what school does to you). Anyways, so Anusha(krazy4_sonu) was asking me why I don’t write so often. The answer is I’d love to write regularly but unfortunately school didn’t allow me the time to write what with coming home late and all that studying and homework you never had much time for anything else. So since it’s holiday time and stuff, I decided to see how much reviews I could write and what better way to start off than with a review on my favourite thing: music.

I’d heard about Paheli as being SRK’s only movie for 2005 and I thought ok, that’s a movie I ought to see and an album I ought to have.(actually I’ve had this album since it came out, I just never wrote on it, well I did start but then I lost the file somehow and never started again) Well the movie proved to be kind of a disappointment, not really what I expect from Shahrukh Khan, however the album was excellent. It wasn’t what I’m accustomed to listening to and it made quite a nice change from the usual lovey-dovey slow songs of Bollywood. While Paheli’s song lyrics speak of love the way the tunes are it would not sound like love at the first listen. To me it was like that. Paheli is a wonderful, classical album done in the Rajasthan style, composed by M.M. Kreem and lyrics are by none other than Gulzar. So enough chit-chat, let’s see what the album is all about.

Dheere Jalna

This is my favourite song in the album. It is sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. The song has a slow, soothing beat and Sonu’s voice is the perfect one for this song (obviously, I think so). The way he sings, slowly, softly and soothingly, it just calms you down and makes feel so wonderful and happy. Shreya’s voice is perfect for the heart-broken and lonely girl Rani plays in the movie (I can’t remember her name). Basically, this is the best song in the album sung wonderfully by Sonuji and Shreya. There is also an instrumental version of this song which is about one of the best instrumentals I’ve heard for a while except for Kal Ho Naa Ho.

Kangna Re

Ahh, the bangles! The bangles don’t please me. Well, I’d say this song was perfect for a wedding seeing it’s mainly about bangles; well it is a nice song to do at a wedding. Once more, it is sung by Sonu and Shreya but this time they are accompanied by Madhushree who I think is a most excellent singer. To be fair, I’d say this song really belongs to Shreya because she does a wonderful performance of Rani saying she doesn’t like the bangles, but of course I have to say that Sonu also did great, I mean the way he sings, it’s just perfect. I love the way he sang kangna re, kangna re, at the end of his verse with a mischievous note to his voice.

Khaali Hai Terey Bina

Hari Haran and Bela Shende team up to sing about the trials and loneliness of the love of the star couple in the movie. Both singers do a wonderful job with the song. The song is a sad love song dealing with the lovers who are separated, Rani pining because she is not with her ghost husband and SRK (the real husband) because he is away from his wife on a business trip.

Laaga Re Jal Laaga

The first time I heard this song I fell in love with it. It’s got a fast, nice classical beat to it. It’s sung by Sonu Nigam (yup he’s done practically the whole album), M.M. Kreem(well all our composers are turning singers!) and Shruti Sadolikar. I must admit this is the first time I’m hearing singers like Shruti and Bela Shende and though I’ve heard her name it’s also the first time I’m hearing Madhushree. This is my second favourite song in the album. Sonu’s voice is so vibrant and alive and sweet and just makes me melt whenever I listen to this song. The voices of all singers blend in well to deliver a wonderful, brilliant song. Really excellent performance and the dance is wowie, I’d love to dance this song!

Minnat Kare

It’s all about marriage and the women discussing the new-found love of one of them(obviously it’s Rani). The song is done by Shreya Ghoshal (no surprises there), Bela Shende and Madhushree. This is another great song to perform at a wedding, it’s got wonderful lyrics and the dance was wonderfully choreographed.
