Personal Preference...

Thats a question every person out in the market to buy a PDA would/should ask himself. Palm or WinCE.

First a lil bit of PDAHandheld basics. Handheld Computers also knows as PalmTops etc etc. come with two basic operating systems - Palm and WindowsCE. Palm is more common and is widely used while WindowsCE is seen in costlier color Palm devices. So the question is should I buy a Handheld with Palm OS or WinCE OS.

Both Palm and WinCE have their pros and cons.I would begin with my budget. Most popular PDA’s at the lower end such as HandSpring and the Sony Clie, not forgetting the Palm devices itself come with Palm OS installed. I have been using my HandSpeing Visor Deluxe with Palm OS and have not had any problems yet. Downloading and installing software from the web is a no-brainer and requires no prior PDA knowledge. Double click on the download and it will automatically install the software on your HandHeld the next time you HotSync it with your PC. On the other hand, WinCE has a similar procedure.

As compared to Palm, WinCE OS has been seen in costlier and mostly color PDA’s. Currently the famous ones are the CompaqiPaq and the HP Jonarda, both having a list price of approx$400-$500. They come with builtin memory(upto 32mb). With the WinCE OS, you have the advantage of installing and runnins Microsoft Software packages such as Word, Excel etc. Other advantage can be that when HandHelds become more common, you will see a lot of softwares introduced by Microsoft and other companies for WinCE OS.

Palm will also be in the market providing a more robust OS having a larger market share than WinCE.

Now its for you to  decide what you want.I personally think that WinCE has more features than the PalmOS but for a student-user like me, who is not willing/does not need a color HandHeld, PalmOS is just perfect and is doing its job well.
