Welcome to one of Mumbai?s cutest mock dhabas. Complete with copper topped tables, blaring bhangra beats and waiters dressed like they could break into one at any moment.
What?s the best part about Papa Pancho?s, though is the food ? delectably authentic Punjabi fare, direct dil se. Situated amongst a row of new age eateries in Bandra?s Pali Market, you?ll find this restaurant cosy, homely and inviting.
And you?ll also find it packed ? took me half an hour to get into the indoor AC section. Though if you?re in the mood and its not too hot, do sit outside and take in the lively atmosphere.
Now for the food! On closer inspection of the menu pinned to a wooden chopping board, it is a relief to know that Punjabi food is not about Malai Kofta, Paneer Palak and Chana Masala ? something that your local Udupi might con you into believing. And you?re sure to smile at the roti-shoti, chaawal-shaawal and other little Punju touches here and there.
Dig into the really flavourful Sarson da Saag, Makke di Roti and Rajma Chaawal with gusto. There are plenty of varieties of thick juicy paneer on offer. As well as a choice of stuffed (literally!) paranthas. Carnivores can revel in the tandoori chicken or other assorted gravies that they cook it in.
What you must not forget at any cost, however is to drown everything down with a glass of masala chhaas or thick sweet lassi. It comes in a huge copper tumbler and usually needs at least two people to finish.
The place is usually peppered with hep Bandraites with a fair sprinkling of familiar model-type faces. Dear adman / madman Pralhad Kakkar ? thanks, yeh dil maange more!
