Before writing the review on the resort, i would like to caution you about the malpe beach on which the resort is located. The beach is naturally very good, and since the tidal waves are of less intensity, it is exhilarating to get into the waters and as the depth of the sea bed progressively increases means one could actually walk few meters into the sea comfortably without the fear of being drowned and enjoy it. Of course this holds good for people who cannot swim which is the case with me.
Alright if everything is fine, then what is that i am cautioning about. Well "its the mad crowd" which spoils the entire show, now i am not expecting a completely solitary beach, but yes relatively unmanned areas around the beach resort especially afterpaying a premium for it, now thats exactly i am cautioning you about this resort, its simply at a wrong place, more precisely its amidst of the public beach. On top of it we went there on public holiday combined with long weekend effect .
A perfect spoiler at this beach. The crowd which lands up there is from nearby rural areas, and you know the rest i.e lacks civic sense, hygeine etc etc. So mates do not even think of going to this beach/resort on a public holiday or an weekend. Try it on a week-day and let me know if there is any difference from what i had seen. I would rather recommend not to venture here, but you have not much options then try your luck!!!!
About resort
Reaching there
If you happened to commute from bangalore, then take the nh4 road, left turn at nelamangala to kunigal -> hassan -> belur -> chikmagulur -> vastare -> balehonur -> sringeri -> agumbe -> manipal -> malpe. It takes about 10 hours to reach there. Overall the road condition between chikmagulur and udupi is good at the time of this writing. Better than the other roads which connect to mangalore/udupi. I had resorted to this road map after enough researching/googling. It worked out to be good. We left 5am @ bangalore to avoid the mad traffic on nh4, and reached resort at 3:15pm.
Rooms
Its a 2 star resort, the rooms were good and nicely maintained, they have this sea facing and non-sea facing rooms. I had happened to stay in the sea facing room but unfortunately told on the last minute that it was on the ground floor, and the view from there was not that good. So mates opt for sea facing rooms and ask atleast from the first floor or above. They have all the basic amenities in the room, ac, mini bar, closet, bathtub, tv, dressing table, good lighting and rest of it was well furnished. All this comes at a price of 4000-6000 rs entirely depending on the time of visit. Seasonal, holidays etc.
Amenities
They have swimming pool which is not maintained well, does not look healthy either you could request them to get it prepared, which we had not done, and none of the guests residing at the time our visit. They talk of indoor games which we were not aware where they exist. They can arrange water sports, and though we havent tried, at the look of it seems to be good i.e biking, rowing and stuff like that. They also arrange for an house boat so you could think of this option if you are keen. The resoirt morever looks like a convential hotel with very less landscaping, but the access to the beach is very good its just 50-100 mts aways. Ocean view restraunt seems to be good where you could sip coffee overlooking the sea from the first floor. By the way a poor quality discotheque, which is badminton-court convertable :-) you know what i mean!
Service/staff
Service is not that great, perfectly un-trained staff. It starts right from the person who handled luggage from car to the room, to reception staff , and to the restraunt ones, they simply are not trained to handle the customers well. Since we went in the holiday season, the resort was brewing with people, and they had managed to conduct some sort of cultural programs which were good, and an complimentary gift.
Food
We had opted for american plan, so had to eat the food provided in the buffet, they had given more variety for non-vegetarians than vegetarians, me and my wife being vegetarians had suffered here too for lack of choice. However the food was good, and no complains against the taste. I cannot pen down about the non-vegetarian stuff, but they did have sea-food, as well as the regular chicken and the rest.
The beach
See my words of caution at the beginning. Beware!!!
Summary
Overall the resort by itself is just ok to visit subjected to conditions :-) , and since you really do not have much options on the karnataka coastal regions it may worth giving a try once on a "week day". By the way, the only good factor was the room condition, and its furnishing or else the rest was moderate and not an memorable experience.
