Avoidable

The first thing that comes to your mind after thinking of Parineeta is Devdas. Both the movies are period films in Bengali background and both of them are based on Sarat Chandra’s novels. However, the similarity is limited to that extent. Whereas Devdas was a classic, Parineeta not even comes close to being one.(Devdas haters please excuse me).

The cast of Parineeta comprises of Vidya Balan(hope I am right here), Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Diya Mirza.

The movie starts with the day of Saif Ali Khan’s marriage with Diya Mirza .then, it goes into flashback mode. In the flashback, it is seen that Saif had earlier loved Vidya Balan and the circumstances which led to him agreeing to marry Diya Mirza. The flashback consumes most of the movie. Only the climax is left for the end.

The acting of the entire cast lacks inspiration. I am not saying that it is bad but there is nothing to compel you to say ‘Now that was something.’Saif fails. He has the same expression throughout the movie. The role of Diya Mirza is so small that I am surprised it wasn’t a guest appearance. Sanjay Dutt fails to ruffle any feathers and Vidya Balan is reasonably decent.

The trailers of the movie have been so exhaustive that all the good scenes have been seen in the trailers. There is nothing much left to see in the movie.

Some of the songs are good.’Yeh hawayien(Kasto mazaa)’ is the only song that I really liked .It reminds you of ‘kyon hawa’ from Veer Zaara. ‘Kaisi yeh paheli hai’ picturised on Rekha has been forcibly inserted.

The movie is too slow and lacks the capacity to hold the viewer. The director has put too much emphasis on getting the period settings right. If only he could have focused on getting the other aspects right, the movie could have been better.
