Movies made with a promise of being serene and which delve themselves into a novel are better made movies then the ones made on Originally written script, Parineeta is one of them, Well Parineeta means Married women, so do we relate this to social drama straightjacket considering the meaning, well no. So the movie is exceptional but not classic because of the reasons you will read.
Its a VVC i.e. Vidhu Vinod Chopra Production and the movie is adapted from a Novel of Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, so after recent Devdas in 2002 this is 2nd of such attempts, Well it talks about two childhood friends Shekhar and Lolita played by SAK and new on the scene Vidya Balan, untill there friendship turns in love but the life is destined to be somewhere else as there is an undercurrent of Business Interests in Shekhars father which is the twist in the story. So what happens to lovers, what happen to the business interests, who is Girish played by Sanjay Dutt, Simple! Go Watch Parineeta.
The onset of the movie is gripping to the family audiences (the ones who will be the target frame of the movie), The marriage scene, Shekhars intro are all well set, So what better then to start the movie with the voice of ABsr., So when the whole set up of 1962 Calcutta is shown it Grips the viewer to the period, it made me know a few things like Gol Gappas are called Puchkaas in Bengal :-).
The movie then gets in the flashback mode to develop the chemistry between the lovers, I might say the Music by Shantanu Moitra is good but not great that would have really sent the movie a top, well in Indian Cinema that too a period love story you need excellent music to set the terms, this is where Parineeta falters, Although there are songs which will make it good in your ears like Piya Bole.. and Yeh Hawayein which is picturized well too, The movie at no point bores you or intends to get into extra footage to make a grieving character, So character wise blemishes would only go to Raima Sens one as she was a ll loud and since considering the climax her character needed a better appearance rather then a tamed goat like she looks in the end & also Gayatri’s played by Dia Mirza, her is like appearing and reappearing to speak in English and no point she shows that she is kind of shrewd as her character requires her to be, like in one scene she says Let me get married to him, then I will kill him, Where does she goes in the end..Umm is untold.
Otherwise its well sketched characters almost for everyone, like for instance Achyut Potdaars character is a perfect example of the period who believes. trusts, it was a sketch of the people of that times when there was more of people respect then the money respect, T-W-I-S-T if you may ask are there any?, then yes there is and a nice one which now gets the average viewer much interested, so I wont tell you that either.
Blemishes in the movie well a significant one is the End, which is loud and funny to say the least, well the whole Tod Shekhar Tod scene looked out of place for the whole feel of the movie, Infact we were sitting quiet throughout he movie until the end when we got along and started cheer Shekhar Tod Tod Shekar , he he :) , must be a Wall of Gujarat Ambuja Cement , otherwise there are minors one which can be ignored like for instance they show a ground in Kolkata where you can easily see New Cars like Maruti etc in the Background, The Natraj red line pencil design is a outcome of 1980’s not 62 as they have shown Shekhar using the same. Saridon is an age old tablet no doubt but it didn’t have the same packing then in 1962, unfortunately they have shown the tablet in new packing.
Technicalities are good to very good, as I said the movie doesn’t bore you until you don’t like any song or so, so Screenplay by Pradeep Sarkar and VVC is good, Cinematography is brilliant as I found it, and so is the Direction he has transformed from Bengali to Hindi cinema well and as a Debutant hindi film maker I give him A+, Editingis good too as the movie never drags unlike BnB, though a song can be chopped.
Performance wise I feel the movie has to go to the New Star Vidya Balan, you might have seen her in the Surf Excel Ad before but here she emotes through her very very pretty face I must say and she gives a tremendous performance, watch her in the scene with SAK on the stairs when he meets her after marriage, Saif Ali Khan is good I must say and looks apt for the display of 1962 ‘s rich youth and gives a perfect picture of a man stuck between art and business, Sanjay Dutt is subtle and its after a long time may be after Saajan he’s looked that way, you know I liked him good to see him out of those Musa and Billa kind of roles, Support Cast is as good as it gets, well done by them especially Achyut Potdaar and Ninaad Kamath.
Overall, the movie is a must watch as I put it, it is much better then BnB and only glitch you may find is the melodrama in the end otherwise It’s a few good products of this year.
Cticize’s Quote::: “The movie is good to perfect and will generate 2nd time viewing as well, Boxoffice wise I feel this will get home, it should yaar if products like BnB can do, My personal favorite scene is Ninaad Kamath asking for credit from a beggar”
