I am a very big fan of Robert James ( Bobby ) Fischer. Ive read many things about his chess and life and after watching Pawn sacrifice I was really left with a bored expression on my face.
Honestly I was pretty excited to watch this movie as I thought it would be really inspiring but it is not at all the case. The movie has been made to show some historical background and mostly the cold war between usa and russia. It never shows the true depth with which fischer played chess.
I feel they could have done much better with this true story. There were so many other inspiring things abt fischer which they could have shown to inspire the young minds in their lives and also make chess a much more popular sport.
The way fischer lived, trained for his improvement hasnt been shown at all. They have just shown that he was a pretty talented lad who was very much interested in the game. But just being a prodigy doesnt make u a world champion and one of the best chess players of all time. His devotion, his hard work towards chess could have been shown deeply which js being missed in this movie.
In this movie they have covered some aspects of the 1972 World championship match against Boris Spassky along with the demands and personality of fischer. They have shown this match decently, although I feel it could have much better. Boris spassky has been portrayed as a bit of a serious and negative personality but in truth he was a bery nice man.
The only good thing about this movie is Tobey Maguires acting. He has done justice to the role which he was given and I loved the way he has acted.
All in all it was a pretty dissapointing experience for me. I would not recommend this movie for anyone who values time and money.
