It’s a peppy frothy campus caper, which is about friendship, love and self-discovery, different yet enjoyable music, star cast that comprises of fresh faces, a debutant director at the helm, Popcorn is actually a spectacularly simple film and that’s where I found it so special...
When I first heard of the film, through promos and posters… I was really attracted by the title.. kya mast title hai baap!… but then I never had any good expectation with the film as it had neither Hit faces.. nor hit director…
But eventually after spending my hard earned money on the tickets (yeah ticketS !), I was really glad that it didn’t go a waste (the credit also goes to the one who gave me company.. And shared my popcorn!)
Popcorn Khao! Mast Ho Jao! is a warm comedy with moments of tender romance. Its about love, laughter, loneliness and everything that makes up the wonder years of life. It’s a fun film without any preaching and that’s where you get a sharp difference. I go for movies for enjoyment and a little relaxation… and the movie did give value to my spending!
The story is about three closest of friends (form the ‘ kurta gang) in the college located at a place called Sanganer… The eternal dreamer Rahul (Akshay Kapoor)… the ever-consistent Tania (Tanishaa Mukherjee… Ah ha! Another promising Bengali actress!) and the crazy crazy Goldie (I forgot his name.. but was good at acting). And then of course there is heart-throbbing Sonia (Rashmi Nigam). Sonia of the luscious lips, the long curly hair, the honey colored eyes.... The stuff that every boys dreams are made of... and Rahul is no different boy! The film starts in college, then moves to Mumbai along with Rahul’s dream to become a music composer and travels with these four characters as they set off thereafter to achieve their own individual goals and realise their dreams. And yeah, eventually fall in love.
Popcorn certainly defies the myth that films with newcomers are always small. This is as big as it gets! All you need to do is open your heart to it – and it will take you places you have never even dreamt of!
