Michael Morpurgo generally writes children’s books. His other books like War Horse and Beautiful Lion are more popular than Private Peaceful.
Private Peaceful is the tale of the brutal consequences of war. Its main characters Thomas Peaceful or’Tommo’ is the youngest of the three Peaceful brothers. Big Joe, the eldest of all the Peaceful brothers, is mentally-challenged and is different from others. He’s greatly loved and cared for by his two brothers Tommo and Charlie. Charlie Peaceful is Tommo’s best friend and jolliest companion. Charlie and Tommo do all things together, they go out together, sleep together and finally go to war together. Tommo who hides a terrible secret in his heart finds it best to share everything with Charlie and their best friend Molly. The Peacefuls’ life takes a turn for the worse after their father’s death. Their mother is left alone to earn and run the family and their cottage at the mercy of Colonel. On top of that, Grandma Wolf makes matters worse by interfering in their peaceful lives.
As the plot proceeds, we witness the heartbreak of Tommo, Molly, the love of his life, loves Charlie and so does he. Ultimately, after many problems, Molly is married off to Charlie and this becomes unbearable to Tommo. He finds ways to avoid Charlie and finally joins the British troops as a soldier for World War I, but do does Charlie. And then what follows is a master of a tale. The misery of leading a life as a soldier, living in deep trenches with rats and lice, having an encounter with death almost everyday yet nearly surviving for the day. From once leading a free and cheerful life, ther existence is now turned into a toilsome one. Yet one good thing happens - Charlie and Tommo again becomes best buddies, just like the good old school days.
However to know what happens in the end, you readers have to read this awesome book.
