they says you should not go because their only water source would be left behind and traveling all that way in the heat to meet the saracens, would tire them out and they would most likely die.
Balian of Ibelin may have felt that the Crusaders were not ready to battle with Saladin because the defenders would rather kill each other and destroy the city than see it taken by force.
