Gumboot Dhlamin is buried by Reverend Henry Ransome and the reverend is sorely troubled after burying another man whose name no-one knows. The cemetery is surrounded by stunted trees and a broken fence–it is a depressing place.

Dark represents the bad, murderous, ruthless and violent aspect of the text. The story begins in the darkness when Tsotsi is still a thug who kills and robs with his gang but as the story progresses and he moves closer and closer to becoming David we see more light appear in his life.

what is the significance of Totsi reffering to himself as Totsi and not as David
May 26, 2020
By: ryanshapley2003
David as Totsi as His name, in Tsotsitaal, means "thug" or "criminal". By referring to himself as David, he has left his identity as a tsotsi behind him. With the help of faith, he wants to return to the innocent, happy, loving, decent boy he once was.

Discuss how tsotsi. Morris tshabalala and the baby all embody the struggle to survive
May 22, 2019
By: keanuadams11
Morris pays attention to Tsotsi, because his hands are often stepped on by people in the street and people apologise. Morris lost his legs in a mining accident. he had worked on the mines for a meager salary. He is not able to find work, and is forced to live as a beggar on the streets.
we know Tsotsi to be a merciless gangster and when he meets Morris, he is reminded of his past, the "yellow bitch" . Morris is a proud man and now his hands are hard that he actually puts butter on it. The baby was given to Tsotsi when he wanted to rape the women by the blue gum trees. All these play a role in his in remembering the past. Tsotsi is becoming merciful.

why does the writer tell us a lot of details about gumboot
May 17, 2018
By: kashalayusuf
Gumboot Ghalimini is innocent man. Tsotsi targeted Gumboot for three reasons: he smiled, he wore a flaming red tie, and he bought his ticket with money from his pay packet. gumboot is main character because after the death of his all gang members change.
Gumboot were also unfortunate in the timing of events. Gumboot would have been on his way out of Johannesburg. Gumboot hates being parted from Maxulu and longs to be with her wife. Tsotsi chooses Gumboot for three reasons: First, Gumboot’s happy smile is like a light in the area and, second, the bright red tie he is wearing makes him easy to follow. The third reason is that, when Gumboot pays for his ticket, he reveals that he has quite a lot of money.
