This author is a highly respected name in the Literature world. He indulges incessantly in writing short tales & long Poems. His Birthday falls on Jan 19th 1809 and the day Mother Earth lost her son in the form of Poe was October 7, 1849.
Just 40 years of life, but this man coruscated in brilliance owing to the literary works in the form of critically renowned poems mainly The Raven, Lenore, Annabel Lee.
He wrote superb short stories that consisted of spooky, thrilling & intelligent framework of brevity knitted with skill. Some of his famous creations are A Descent into the Maelstrom, The Tell Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, & The Purloined Letter.

As the title suggests, the tale directs its main theme on to the coveted letter that was purloined (stolen). There are just 3 talking characters in the book in the shape of the narrator, Prefect & Dupin. To have a short trip through the story, it depicts the pain staking search of the prefect for the letter & the importance of human mind in it.
Human Mind
The human mind is one of the deepest unexplored treasure that life offers us. It has intensely intelligent & profound ways of doing an act that it becomes very vexing for us to fathom its nature of action.

Although there were mere three (live & talking) characters of importance, Poe has depicted their appearance & behavior with great skill. The ambiance set up was the one that furnishes the necessary bolster for the smooth flow of the story.
Since the story is primarily concerned in showing how the purloined letter was brought back, the characters & ambiance were purely situational and immensely meaningful.
A possible chance
It is a very probable chance that you might easily wither away from reading the tale once it enters into the apogee (climax), but I suggest you to just make some effort it calls for. Since the words used are heavy, You might want to use a dictionary in parallel to reading the tale.
The description of the solution of the robbery calls for patience and once you offer your share of patience, Poe would offer his deep intelligence in the form of awesomely skilled answers to some of the questions you might have splashed in your mind while fording through the tale.
