About a year back, I started giving my husband quaker oats, reading about the great health benifits oats gives, and the miraculous weight loss, and lowering of cholesterol, all the problems which my husband has. Well guess what, we were given a surprise after 4 months of using it, but it was an unpleasant one??. My husband started developing severe joint pains and swelling of the feet and toes. On doing a complete blood work up, it was found that his uric acid levels were over the roof. He had to have an arthroscopy surgery of the knee to clean up the uric acid deposits, and is now on medication. neither he lost weight, his cholesterol os still high, and now this added problem of gout. It was then our orthopaedician told us that oats is the culprit for the gout, as oats contain lots of purine, it causes gout and kidney stones in people, and apart from fibre it has no nutritional benifit. So please, though oats maybe a quickfix breakfast, be careful if you are prone to stones and gout.
