Ramayan in at any time is a delight to watch. specially if its coming from a production house like Sagars. Theyve excelled in mythologies without doubt. Their decision of remaking Ramayan was right . Today when TV is dominated by saas bahu soaps, reality or "unreal" shows and shadi/bidai/dulhan etc. soaps, a mythology was badly needed. specially for todays generation who find the previous version of Ramayan "boring and slow" in the "modern" times.
To sum up, Ramayan started off on a great note. The childhood of Shri Ram, Ayodhya kaand, Sita swayamvar, Ram-Sita wedding, Ram vanvaas, private moments of Ram and Sita, Hanumans childhood, Ravans additional stories and curses, all were handled exceptionally well. but after Sita haran, I feel Ramayan has downslided a bit. From the time Ravan came, the vanars, the story is being streched too much.sometimes 2-3 weeks r dedicated to 1 sub plot(vaalis vadh and Sitas search).and sometimes a major event comes and go very quickly(Hanuman destroying Lanka).its back on track with Ram setu construction and Ram crossing the ocean to reach Lanka.
the actor playing Ravan is miscasted. He cant deliver his dialogues without using too much force.to raise his voice, he has to put in a lot of effort.he looks constipated most of the time. Everybody in Lanka is more funny than scary. Same goes for t he vanar sena. Hanuman doesnt have the physique . Angad, Nal, Neel all are very slim n petty n they all look the same.
the music of Ramayan is good but most of the background tunes are taken from old Ramayan and Shri Krishna. for eg. the song "namo narayana" played during the swayamvar, its tune was taken from old Ramayan song when Lav Kush were narrating Ramayan to Lord Ram in Ayodhya. All of them belong to Ravindra Jain but they r not new. the lyrics r good though. sets and costumes r nice, although they r recycled most of the time.
the dialogues many times are copied from the old Ramayan. many times they are twisted n new lines are added to "create" new dialogues. ppl. like me who remember the old Ramayan by heart, can point out at every step where they were "inspired" from the old Ramayan. but since the old Ramayan also belongs to them, who can complain?
All in all, a gr8 attempt but not perfect unlike the old Ramayan.
