How would you rate a movie that has an amazing script, an outstanding screenplay, beautiful cinematography, brilliant performances and excellent music & breathing background score? In simple words... Awesome!!! Rakeysh Mehra brings you to Rang De Basanti a movie that shall be a benchmark in story and filmmaking. Every aspect of the movie is simply perfect. The movie starts of with the black & white scene of Sharman Joshi & Siddarth in jail and Alice Patton is reading from her grandfathers diary.
Her producer turns her documentary making her proposal down to budget problems. She decides to go to India and make it on her own. Here she meets Aamir, Soha, Sharman and Kunal, who are all college students except Aamir who has passed out college 5 years back but still likes hanging out there. After failed attempts at casting college students for a various role of freedom fighters, Alice bounds the idea to her new friends who agree to be part of it. Madhavan plays the role of a pilot who later dies in a crash.
This forms the turning point of the entire story. In the documentary Aamir plays Chandrasekhar Azad, Sharman plays Raj Guru, Siddarth plays Bhagat Singh and Atul plays Ram Prasad Bismal. The movie beautifully blends the pre – independence era and the present. In fact, it is done so well. That not for one second that the movie has jumped from its flow or its telling a different story all together. This movie deserve more than five only because for the new concept of story telling. By the end of the movie the past and the present looks so similar that you will feel that you are in a time machine.
The movie scores in all the major departments. The Director has extracted amazing performance from the entire cast and crew of this movie. Sharman Joshi as Sukhi delivers his best performance so far in his career. His one-liners are simply superb. His comic and dramatic scenes are excellent. Soha Ali Khan performs well. Madhavan in a special appearance is a perfect coup. He performs with amazing grace. Kunal as Aslam is another natural performer. He underplays his role to perfection. Atul Kulkarni as Laxman Pandey in the role of a sainik with his heart in his roots.
Siddarth is amazing on his role of Karan. Alice Patton as Sue is beautiful and gives a strong performance. Anupam Kher and Waheeda Rehman do not have much impact on their roles. Kiron Kher and Om Puri do well in their brief roles. Aamir Khan as DJ, Daljeet Singh is simply what an actor should be. At 40 he convinces you that he is 26 to 30 and that in it self is an achievement. His comic timing is superb as always. His one-liners are wacky. His body language and facial expressions are beyond belief.
His Punjabi accent is perfect. His emotional and dramatic scene is absolutely outstanding. A.K as D.J is the perfectionist has given his career best along with Mangal Pandey. Aamir Khan as Chandrasekhar Azad is again brilliant and his body language and expressions is completely different from D.J. He just keeps the audience on the back of their seats. A.R Rehman music is brilliant. Although most of the songs are played in the background. It fits well in the narration of the movie. The best song for me was the Khalbali the remixed version in the opening track.
His work in RDB is pure class. The lyrics and dialogs of Prasoon Joshi is at it peak of brilliance. Binod Pradan cinematography is excellent. The movie has something for everyone, for young and old alike. This movie is worth repeated viewings. Here is a movie with a powerful script and story which is told in a unique manner something that has not been showed in Hindi Cinema before. The feeling that when an audience watches RDB. I was touched by this movie and so will you.
