Rang De Basanti AWAKES the generation!

I had expected this movie to be light and breezy. But I was wrong! This movie is patriotic, excellent and much more than I had expected!!!!

The main characters of the movie:

DJ (Aamir Khan): His real name is Daljeet Singh. He is a happy-go-lucky man. He loves to dance and also to live his life to his fullest. In other words, no other in the world can be so happy and funny than DJ!

Soniya (Soha Ali Khan): She is a simple, sweet and cute girl. She is a nice friend of DJ and his friends but gets angry when they keep on laughing continuously.

Sukhi (Sharman Joshi): He is a funny and somewhat like DJ. When he gets drunk, he gets mad and talks and behaves in a very comic way. No girl pays attention to him. He is always desperate to get married

Aslam (Kunal Kapoor): The only ‘intelligent’ guy in the group! He is a Muslim. His father (Om Puri) wants him to stay away from his non-Muslim friends and thinks that this country is not for Muslims. But he is completely opposite of his Pa and always roams with DJ and his gang, and enjoys with them too!

Karan (Siddharth): He is the son of a rich businessman (Anupam Kher). He does not like his father’s ideas and deeds and want to stay with Dj’s gang. He hates this country and think that nothing can happen of India.

Ajay (Madhavan): The most serious guy in the group. He is the fiancé of Soniya. Ajay is a flight lieutenant in the Air Force. He is a good friend, nice son, loving fiancé but completely opposite of Karan’s ideas about India!

Laxman (Atul Kulkarni): He is a politician. He is against the western culture and does not want it to spread in India. Another serious guy in DJ’s group.

The Story of the movie: Sue’s (Alice Patten) grandfather was James Mickenley had served the British Army in India before independence. He had seen the works of Bhagat Singh and his gang through his eyes and had penned his thoughts in a diary. One day Sue got that diary. She read it and decided to go to India and make a documentary on the Indian revolutionaries. She wanted DJ and his gang to play the role of a revolutionary. At first, they refused but later agreed. They took a very long time to come out of their funny nature to act this role. Ajay was not there as he had to go for his duty anytime. One such time when he went, he did not come back as he sacrificed his life while flying the MIG-21 plane. He could have saved his life by jumping from the plane using the parachute. But he didn’t. He stayed inside the plane to see to it that the plane, while crashing, does not fall on the populated city of Ambala. Ajay’s death made everyone sad. When the defence minister (Mohan Agashe) was asked about this by the media, he told that the plane crashed because of Ajay’s reckless riding! This made DJ and his gang angry, including his mother (Waheeda Rehman) and they decided to fight for it. So how will they fight? And what will they do??

Aamir Khan was as usual excellent. If you saw him as a freedom fighter in Mangal Pandey, watch him as a easy going guy in this movie. He didn’t looked great in his funky hair-style but he acted perfectly.

Soha Ali Khan also is slowly emerging as an actress. She does not disappoint and acts perfectly too.

Alice Patten was surprisingly excellent! She spoke Hindi so fluently that for a moment you will forget that she is not an Indian!

Sharman Joshi was very nice. He looked and acted superbly when he was drunk. Siddharth was too good! He acted so well that it looked like as if he was made for this character!!! Madhavan was okay but he did total justice to his role. Atul Kulkarni has as usual done his work properly!

Others like Om Puri, Mohan Agashe etc had also worked well. In short, everyone has done a very good job.

A R Rahman’s music was as usual nice and breezy. The songs were excellent! The title song was superb. Others like ‘Paathshaala’ ‘Khalbali Hai’, ‘Lupa Chuppi’ etc were also very nice.

Binod Pradhan’s cinematography was mind-blowing and a bit different from the other movies. Allan Amin’s action were as usual flawless.

Rakeysh Mehra’s directon was outstanding and stylish! He has handled the film very nice and sensitively.

What I liked the most about this movie is its message. Rang De Basanti showed how good-for-nothing guys did something great for the country and ignited the fire in the Indian youths. The film asks us “ If they can do so much for their country, then why can’t you?” We all can tell “ Is desh ka kuch nahi ho sakta” but we are not willing to do something for it. Rang De Basanti says us that anyone can do anything for their country, if they want to do.

On the whole, Rang De Basanti has everything, great performances, breezy music, nice direction, a strong message and many many other things. It has all the right to be seen, especially by the youth.
