Its about impulsive set of youth… The movie is full of pro n cons… now a national sensation n a box office hit for its as loud as it could get… I say well done! The youth is running to theaters to see the movie.
Well lets say Ramu had rightly put it in our mouth in the play ‘yaar! What’s the capital of Manipur?’
WE HAVE FOUR THEMES IN OUR LIFE
LOVE & MONEY - AND - MARRIAGE & TECHNOLOGY
I belong to this youth…
I’m so used to the established structure that I don’t bother to rethink about it unless pointed out. I’m so used to it that I’ve turned in to a survivor. I know I have potential but have no patience to make a difference. I’m rather concerned about my boyfriend forgetting to call me than the corrupt system that’s affecting my life since the day I was born in this country. I’m rather interested in securing a luxurious future. I’m preparing to get screwed by the system. I’m preparing to give in. I’m preparing to degrade like the previous generation… and I’ll have no regrets until I finally get screwed.
Or I can just make a difference… yeah! but I bet whole of youth is not so brainlessly suicidal as shown in the movie.
The movie makes a point. Also makes a joke out of the history… depends how you take it. I’m sure we all have aspects we can relate to in this movie.
A set of youngsters… religiously given up on the way India runs… happy singing I’m a rebel, happy with the music of electric guitars, beer, and girlfriends… rightly said in the song- living in masti ki pathshala… but after a pinching incident turn suicidal… copy the story of Bhagat Sing… which by the way is reminded to them by a foreigner… they copy it incident by incident… leaving out the thinking part of it to the buffaloes.
Along with great cinematography n music I wish it had a better worked script that gave a lil more scope for the actors signed. My friend rightly pointed out …they have wasted some actors like Anupam Kher, Kiron Kher, Om Puri… Actor Kunal Kapoor’s charactor of Aslam could have been more impact fully used… or I guess he just got edited out… He played the saner amongst the impulsive group… also the hottest one. Great job of acting by Atul Kulkarni and Sharman Joshi.
Also have wasted the medium of graffiti... except for ones when the lead actors are blindly copying the story of Bhagat sing. Take a lesson on graffiti… it’s medium for unheard, rebels, who want to shout out about the unwanted, corrupt and not just a colorful background, or a cool fashion statement, or a straight copy from west… hell! It isn’t. well! giving em benefit of doubt, just that may be they didn’t want the audience to start painting streets and public places like what happened at the time of the famous old ‘Vasu Sapna’… so didn’t emphasize on graffiti. Or may be this part also got edited.
They have built up the story very well in the first half. The way Alice finds her characters for the documentary in absolute self-absorbed set of college students… she sees them equivalent to the characters from history… Speaking of good things in the movie… the songs… The masti ki pathshala (be a rebel version) calls out for rethinking all over India whereas when Diler Mehendi cries out to you Mohe rang de basanti yaara… calling out for a revolution… soul dances with them.
The cinematography in first half makes sure you won’t want to miss even a second after the interval.
But in the second half when the lead actors try to pose equivalent to Bhagat sing and Rajguru… some pages from history are made to look like just another filmy story because of their filmygiri in the second half. Really! It is ridiculous.
Comparison of that ignorant group to those who dedicated their whole life to freedom? And whats the justification? -That we are still slaves to the corrupt system… we have fun however they treat us… but when our pilot friend crashes with his mig because the mig has fake faulty parts bought by the corrupt defense minister; who then in attempt of saving his position announces our pilot friend as a nausikhiya/ irresponsible pilot… we imagine it to be equivalent to Jalianwalabagh firing. Wow! We have some imagination… frustrating one rather… coz we see the defense minister as the one who gave firing order in Jalianwala bagh to kill our patriot friend… so now… lets be Bhagat sing and Rajguru and kill him…
Oh! Dear god! we never thought he would be called shahid… so now what? Lets do what Bhagat did… lets all get caught with a loud bang and die. We’ll trigger off a sensation. It worked in history so lets make it work in our movie.
And send out a message that lets break this corrupt system. We go on AIR announcing that we’ll get into the system to make it better… what say?
Dudes! Well done! Good work! Nicely copied… Sure helping the thinkers but remember for those who may take a lesson of copying you edit grafitti n sanity out… but know that you are preaching ‘diwangi’.
Anyhow! Its an attempt… Good use of the medium. We can only hope something good comes out of it.
