First thing first, I am a bit late in writing this review; reason behind this is pretty obvious and simple. A true music lover doesn’t get the real taste of Rahman’s music after listening to the songs for 1 or 2 times. The feelings about Rehman’s songs change as you listen to them more and more and with the time you start loving those melodious tunes of him. “Rang de Basanti” is no exception, Rahman has once again proved that he is a genius.
Here is the general info of the album:
Movie: Rang de Basanti
Music: A. R. Rahman
Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi (with Blaaze and Nacim)
Cassette Rs. 60 and CD Rs. 160 available on Sony BMG
About Rahman:
There would be hardly a single man who has not appreciated Rahman’s music ever; he has been superb in his every single effort (few exceptional). He produced a festive music in “Lagaan”, the situation demanded a different kinda music and Rahman delivered it to perfection. Here the music seems to touch youngsters’ heart, since the situation demanded the same. After listening to the CD many times, have felt a touch of both “Yuva” and “Swades” in few songs and definitely you will find few compositions fresh. He has used traditional instruments like “Tabla” and “Harmonium” in one song which adds more beauty to it. In toto Rahman has done justice to his work.
About Prasoon Joshi:
I was watching last year’s Filmfare award; Javed Akhtar after receiving the award for best lyricist has said that the award should have been given to Prasoon Joshi for this talent has given his good in every song he has written. Prasoon once again stood tall with good sensible lyrics that do not create a bitter sound in your ears. Most of the songs of this album are very good; one of the reasons is lyrics too.
1. Ik Onkar (Harshdeep Kaur)
A religious song, a prayer of “GOD” with powerful lyrics and soft music. A perfect start to the album.
2. Rang De Basanti (Daler Mehandi, Chitra)
Combination of Rahman & Daler Mehandi (After “Nach le” from Lakeer), it’s a wonderful song, Daler Paaji is full of energy always and when you listen to this song you will definitely start moving your feet with the beats of Dhol. This song can be considered the best song of the album with Rahman and Daler Paaji at their zenith. Prasoon Joshi has been impressive in this song too, the lyrics pour a feeling of “Veer Ras” and that’s the motto of this song.
3. Paathshala (Naresh Iyer, Mohammad Asalam)
This is what I would say a typical Rahman song, I didn’t like the song at all when I heard it for the first time. I kept listening to this and I found it very good indeed; and believe me you will like the song if you listen to the lyrics carefully. Naresh Iyer is the new talent, has sung 3 songs in the album and looked very promising, this man will go places. The song has a bit of “Yuva” touch in it, but lyrics make it a completely different song.
4. Tu Bin Bataye (Madhushree, Naresh Iyer)
Let’s bring down your energy level and listen to this slow song by Madhushree and Naresh Iyer. A good love song with Prasoon Joshi being most impressive part of this song.
“Tu bin bataye …
Mujhe le chal kaheen ….
Jahan tu Muskuraye .....
meri manzil vaheen .....“
This is what I call simple and effective https://lyrics......
5. Khalbali (A. R. Rahman, Aslam, Nacim)
Again a typical Rahman song, you will not like it until you listen it 10 times. You better listen to this song for getting to know more about it.
6. Khoon Chala (Mohit Chauhan)
Lead singer of “Silk Route” (Dooba dooba rahta hoon …) Mohit Chuhan has sung this song very well, Rahman is good in giving this song a different kinda music with violin and Prasoon Joshi’s lyrics are once again outstanding.
“Kuch kar Guzarne ko khoon chala, khoon chala ….
Aankon ke sheeshe mein, utarne ko khoon chala …
Badan se tapak kar …
Zameen se lipat kar ….
Galiyon se, raaston se ...
Ubhar kar, Umad kar ....
Naye rang bharne ko khoon chala, khoon chala“
7. Paathshala – Be a Rebel (Blaaze, Aslam, Naresh Iyer)
This is again “Paathshala”-version-II, no need to say anything about this one, everything has been mentioned earlier.
8. Luka Chuppi (Lata Mangeshkar, A. R. Rahman)
This beautiful slow song is being recorded in the mellifluous voice of Lata Mangeshkar with Rahman. Everything is perfect about this song; I would say a bit of “Saanwariya - Swades” touch is there in this song.
9. Lalkaar (Aamir Khan, Chorus)
Not a great deal of instruments playing in this song; lyrics are there to be listened; Aamir Khan did well in his singing; over all a good song.
10. Roobaroo (A. R. Rahman, Naresh Iyer)
Naresh Iyer has once again sung a very good song; he’s there to be watched out in near future; as usual Rahman is good; I can say that this is one of the best songs of this album. I have written a lot about Prasoon Joshi, will keep mum this time.
Overall Rang de Basanti deserves a deal of Rs 60/160 for listening to some good music.
