Many of my friends here at MS have already given
their views on Rating Reviews here. All of them
have been excellent and there isnt much I can add.
My reasons for rating a review HR or R are exactly
the same as many of you have already stated. Well
written, full of useful information and well detailed.
In my mind, if a review is uninformative, lacking
details, or has no personality yet gives some useful information, I will give it a SR and I will try to
leave a comment.
Now, on the NR rating. I very rarely use this. It is
saved for two types of reviews only. Abusive, foul
language (no Im not a prude by any means, but this
is not the place for it) and plagiarized articles.
I have ZERO tolerance for thieves and simply
put, plagiarism is theft ! Either of the above
will get your review rated NR and depending on my
mood, maybe a choice comment to go along with it.
It will also be reported immediately.
PET PEEVE - We are here to rate product reviews,
movies, books etc. etc. As I see it, my job is to read
a review (not just skim through), assess the content
and decide whether or not a consumer would find it
useful. No more, No less. If we give lower ratings to
a product because we disagree with or dislike the
writer, we are doing the consumer a great injustice.
Rate on content only.
Even if you dont like a viewpoint - keep in mind that these are opinions and we are all entitled to disagree
but by signing on with MS, we didnt agree to run a popularity contest.
Rating reviews can be an enjoyable task. It can also
be a meaningless task. Make sure you read the entire
review before rating. Dont just scan it and say, wow,
this is a long review, it must deserve an HR.
Last but not least, try to be a little more tolerant of newcomers. Guide them constructively. We want them to
keep writing and get better at it as they go along. Blasting them or harshly criticizing them will only
drive them away and eventually, nobody will want to be here. If we want MS to prosper, we need to read, rate
and write as best we can. We need people to enjoy coming
to the site and not be plagued by ongoing soap operas.
Always be fair in your ratings.
