Storyline
It?s unlikely that you haven?t seen Lagaan and so many reviews have already been written with full details about this movie that I don?t think it would be of any use for me to explain you about each and every scene. So I?ll just summarize the story for you in a few words. The movie is set in a village called Champaner in the year of 1863. British were ruling the territory and used to take heavy taxes (Lagaan) from each farmer. The story is about how these farmers prepare a cricket team in three months and defeat the Englishmen in their national game, which not only frees them from the taxes but also the British leave that empire of Champaner.
Silver Jubilee (25) Things Which You Can Learn From This Movie
1. Nothing Is Impossible. Even the word impossible says that I-m-possible. How a group of illiterate farmers who can?t even pronounce the word cricket, beat the masters of this game is a good proof of this theory!
2. Have Strong Determination. If you aren?t determined enough you just can?t do the task. First you are a believer then you are an achiever. The determination of the captain Aamir Khan even inspires confidence in the rest of the team.
3. Save Wildlife. Wildlife is one of the most precious gifts nature has given us, so we better preserve it. Remember how Aamir Khan tries to save that stag in the jungle!
4. No Discrimination. All individuals are equal. No one is superior to the other. Aamir picks a player called Kachra (meaning garbage) in the team whom the other members even don?t want to touch. But he convinces the whole village that it?s a sin to discriminate on the basis of caste, creed or sex!
5. Think Positive. Positive thinking leads to a positive energy in the body and thus positive movements. Aamir motivates the whole village to be optimistic and prepare for the game rather than thinking about the negatives!
6. Take Calculated Risks. You can?t move ahead in life without taking any chances. The bigger risk you take the higher will be the fortune. The scene when Aamir accepts the challenge of the cricket match implies this very fact.
7. No Substitute For Hard Work. Always remember there is no shortcut to success. The only way to earn it is through sheer hard work. That?s why the villagers were able to win the game as they toiled hard for three months!
8. Help Others. There is no bigger charity in this world than helping someone when he/she needs it the most. Sister of the Capatin Russel (Captain of English Cricket team) did just that by going out of her way to help the villagers.
9. Opposition To Injustice. Everyone deserves a fair chance. That?s the main reason the villagers started a battle against the British and even the sister of Captain Russel went against him to give the farmers a fair chance.
10. Everything Is Fair In Love And War. Some of the strategies that English cricket team employed during the game like bodyline bowling, running out the non-striker while he was carelessly out of his crease, giving a boundary on the last ball proves that if much is at stake then gamesmanship is better than sportsmanship!
11. Unity is the best policy. Once you get united with your fellowmen no power in the world can defeat you. One of the main reasons for the victory of the farmer team was their unity and wonderful rapport with each other.
12. Never Say Die. No matter how adverse the situation is one should never lose hope and keep fighting till the end! This is what won the game for the Aamir?s team.
13. Don?t be over-confident. It would be more appropriate to say that Captain Russel?s team lost the game rather than Bhuvan?s (Aamir) team winning it. And they lost the game mainly because of their careless and over-confident attitude.
14. Not to take your enemies lightly. If you think your enemy is too small to make any influence try sleeping in a closed room with a mosquito. This is what the British ignored and lost the game.
15. Have Faith In God. What to do when you are absolutely hopeless with no one there to support you? Remember the almighty. That?s what Aamir?s team did and he granted them the fruit of success.
16. Truth Always Wins. If you are moving on the path of the truth then no matter what happens you can never lose! You may lose a battle or two initially but eventually war would be won by you. As can be seen by the whole cricket match.
17. To Value Self Respect. The commentator during the match quitted the job of a British servant after being slapped by Captain Russel for no fault of his. In no book is it written that to earn your daily bread you have to give up on your self-respect!
18. True love is unconditional. I?m talking here about the love which Eliza (Captain Russel?s sister) had for Aamir. She proved her love without expecting any favours back from Aamir. She knew his happiness is in being with someone else. And she sacrificed her happiness for his. If this isn?t true love, nothing is!
19. Arrogance fails if misused. The proud and arrogant British couldn?t do anything in front of a bunch of humble down-to-earth villagers. Arrogance doesn?t always work if you carry it so far that you start treating others as dirt!
20. Practice makes a man perfect. The villagers were awful at the game when they begun, but with practice they slowly but surely improved their game!
