When we think about installing Linux most peole suggests Install ’’Redhat’’.What is that Redhat anyway?
Well Linux Operating system is having so many distros than any other OS’s.From these bunch of Distro’s Redhat is the most active, stable, easy to use OS. Well when we comapre it with suse & Mendrake you will find that those distros are much easier to learn than Redhat. But in the comaprison Race Suse & Redhat survives while Mendrake is hands down in case of performance.We will see Redhat features one by one.
Installation:-
Installing Redhat is easy. But Installing linux you have to play game of partioning, which is not so easy. Redhat is provided step by step guide for Disk Partioning which also provides graphical representation of all the partions on hard disk. Newbie with Linux will find confusing this installation process. But anyway you can get yourself out of this in few minutes.
Desktop envirement:-
If you installed Redhat 8.0 before then you will notice that Blue curve desktop project is improved in this release. Switching Desktop & Window mangaers are also revamped in this release. So now any newbie after installing Redhat will find standard Desktop with Whistles & Bells off. Now Desktop is easy to use, it is similar to Windows Classical style. Graphical configuration is Hands down as I told you, it is suitable for office use.
Hardware Suport:-
Redhat 9 supports most of the graphics cards including Sis, nVidia Geforce, Rive etc. There is no conflicts found with Graphics card yet.Sound card? Well many conflicts are reported but it works well with Onboard ac’97drivers. One thing about Redhat is really confusing is that it never create trouble with Samsung CD/DVD drives as I found Gentoo’s trouble with DVD Rom.
Applications:-
Well Linux will remain short on softwares until windows falls down.Very few number of softwares are there like Openoffice.org, Gimp (Image manipulation programme), XMMS player. But now Winamp for Linux will launch soon. Adobe released Acrobat reader, Yahoo’s Messnger, Limewire’s File sharing tool. Anyway Compatibility with RPM packages never was the issue with Redhat. But package management system is pretty confusing. Crossover software let’s us run many window based aplication on linux. Overall rating for this operating syste 4 out 5.
Well mp3 format’s support is removed due to licensing issue.Well many features are missing if we go on digging into linux. But we have to wait & see the progress of Linux. Softwares for Linux can be downloaded from Sourceforge.net or Tucows.com, You can even search for your missing rpm at rpmfind.com
My recommendation If you are serious about installing Linux into your Hard disk then Go with SUse desktop it is stable, reliable & loads with Apps. But if you don’t wanna risk your hard disk then try Gnoppix(Gnome file manager as default) Linux on CD or Knoppix (KDE as Defualt).And if you like these Distro’s then Install Debian Distro so you can get maximum out of Linux.
