How is that possible? Not even a single review? Damn. I own a video cassette of this movie and I dont know how many times I have seen this film. Probably because it was there, I saw it. But this movie was good compared to many insensible movies that are churned out on a weekly basis in recent times. On the contrary, have I been seeing a flop movie n number of times all these days? Since there wasnt any review on this movie, let me be the first (atleast here coz the first comment in the comments section is always booked in advance by pras, rohit, sometimes ekta , gs_amith and apiscean ) jus kiddin people.
Coming to the story,
It is the story of Ramesh aka Romeo (Anil) and Simmi (Sridevi) (Trivia: In Bunty aur babli, Abhishek was Rakesh and Rani was Vimmi ???). When both were kids, knowingly or unknowingly, their father is killed ruthlessly by Jagmohanlal Jugran (Brilliantly played by Anupam Kher). Ramesh doesnt know about his fathers death but Simmi knows about it and has a vengeance deep rooted in her heart to find the killer. Fate brings Ramesh and Simmi together in an orphanage where they become best of friends. But their friendship doesnt last long as Simmi gets adopted by a couple and Ramesh runs out of the orphanage only to fall on the hands of a seth (Paresh Rawal).
Now Ramesh becomes a safe cracker, choron ka raja (King of Robbery) and in another part of the country, Simmi grows on to become the roop ki rani(Queen of Beauty). Both of them do con jobs (though there are some unbelievable events, I felt it interesting than Bunty aur Babli, Aditya chopra listening??).
During a necklace robbery, Simmi and Ramesh meet. Ramesh and Simmi challenge each other for each robbery and each one of them win alternatively. Simmi who has the thirst to know her fathers killer meets jugran who claims to know her fathers killer. For knowing her fathers killer, he asks Simmi to get Ramesh to do a train robbery as compensation. Now when she tries to seduce Ramesh, he insults her and she takes him to the mental asylum to show her mothers condition. When she narrates her story, Ramesh identifies his child companion in Simmi. So love blossoms.
So whether they are able to identify the killer in Jugran who is faking the world with his brothers identity as Manmohan and doing underworld activities as Jugran forms the rest of the story.
I apologize for making the story part a bit lengthy. Cudnt cut down a single word.
Scenes Analysis
The first con game when Sridevi sings Yaaron Ko Jaan Hai Pyaari and her
comic delivery in the song (yes, she is capable of comedy in songs also). The next con game with the chinese Statue. This was the most hilarious of all. They use some made-up chinese slangs (with chinese costumes) like chandi ka chamcha (which is definitely Hindi) and Anil calls himself Bring singh Baddada of Mathunga (isnt that in Mumbai). Sridevi looks too cute when she says Aey Kilikili..
The scene when Sridevi has a dream in which Anil is her husband and she makes a drama in front of people saying that he is selling her necklace for booz. Thats a fantastic scene.
Anil Kapoor has a pigeon which is actually smart (not like MPK or MPKDH dumb ones) and the way it finds the number of the car which kills sridevis uncle is brilliant. The scene after that when Anil finds that Jackie is his brother when his keychain fits the lock on Jackies table. Just then Jackie tells his higher authorities somehow he will find the safe cracker (Anil), that scene is brilliantly handled.
The famous train robbery. I wouldnt say it is the best but definitely better than Bunty aur Babli airplane sequence.
Anil and Sridevi hanging on the top of the acid pool and playing the childhood game and the smart pigeon (damn, I forgot itz name) saves them in a very intelligent way. Good one!
The scene when Anil finds out that Manmohan and Jugran are the same person and the climax scene are the best scenes in the film.
On the flip side,
Though the songs are good and something develops in each song, having a song for each con game was too much and time-consuming. This is the biggest minus point of the movie..
Performances
Anil and Sridevi breathe life into their characters and are amazingly at ease in front of the camera. They share a dynamic chemistry too. Sridevi actually steals the show for she is not only a stunner, but also acts exceptionally (a rare feat these days) with so much dedication that I really started loving her more after this movie. Anupam Kher was excellent as Jugran and his telling Shaitaan ki kasam was one of the highpoints of the film. Jackies role is completely sidelined yet he leaves a mark. Paresh Rawal was cool as the villain who brings up Anil. Others in the cast were perfect. Songs by Laxmikant Pyarelal were hummable and as I said, too many songs spoiled the flow of the movie. Cinematography is good and almost all the scenes were shot indoor (not indore!!). Director Satish Kaushik do succeed in bringing a good entertainer.
Verdict
If you have not watched this film, please get the DVD and watch it. It is a very nice time pass flick. A 7.5 on 10 for the entertainment value and Sridevi.
