Rules – Pyar Ka Superhit Formula: MUSIC REVIEW
When I first viewed the trailer of Rules I dismissed it as one of those sad attempts by a Yash Chopra wannabe! But, recently, I read its movie reviews and was surprised to find that this low-budget movie was much more appreciated than the biggies Kuch Na Kaho and Calcutta Mail. That’s when curiosity kicked in! I picked out the music album of Rules, and, boy, was I hooked or what!
Simple, melodious, feel-good are some phrases that aptly describe the music album of Rules. Sandesh Shandaliya (remember the guy who orchestrated the brilliant Suraj Hua Madham in K3G) has definitely struck gold with some innovative pieces and is ably supported by newcomers Subrat Sinha and R.N.Dubey in the writing department.
Uljhano Ko De Diya Hai – Sanjeevni and KK
Uljhano Ko is of a girl who sweetly questions her lover about his feelings for her and also guesses his answers. The guy then confirms her positive assumptions, hence indirectly declaring that he is in love with her. The lyrics of Uljhano Ko are simple but situational.
Shandaliya realized that the singers will ‘make or break’ this song and hence uses very soft music with flutes and sitars to bring them to the forefront. Must say that he is not let down because his singers do an excellent job. KK’s pleasant vocals complemented by Sanjeevni’s expressive vocals take the song to an ‘evergreen’ level! Sanjeevni, especially, sounds so innocent and shy that you got to fall in love with her.
A song any girl would pick for her lover – 10/10
Pyaar KE Naam Pe – Bombay Vikings
Its Love That I Need
Its Only Love That I Need
Its Love That I Need
Its Only Love That I Need
Yep! That is how this melodious song, sung by Bombay Vikings singer Neeraj, begins! A male solo, Pyaar Ke talks about everything a person does to impress his lover – giving flowers, embracing, making lifelong promises, counting the stars at night, daydreaming, and so on. The guy then prays that he should also fall in love soon and live with his girlfriend forever. The lines are subtly humorous.
Pyaar Ke Naam Pe took some listens to grow on me, probably because I was initially thrown off by the English https://lyrics. But, now, I realize that they definitely raise the song several notches, especially the lyrics that appear in the middle of the song! The music is rhythmic and foot tapping.
Its Only Love I Want To Hold On To
And For Ever Make It Stay
Hold On To
Hold On To
And For Ever Make It Stay
Its Only Love I Want To Hold On To
And For Ever Make It Stay
A hip song - 9/10
Gori Tore Nain – Sonu Nigam
This is definitely the most creative piece of Rules. It is easy to infer that Gori Tore Nain is on a guy appreciating his girl’s beauty and its effect on him. My favorite lines of the song:
Madhur Madhur Muskaan Jharat Hai
Ang Ang Bijuri Chamkat Hai
Lutat Man Kaa Chain
Gori Tore Nain Baavre Kholein Bhed Ye Saare
Gori Tore Nain Baavre Kholein Bhed Ye Saare
Satrangi Si Badri Chaayee Preet Ki Aisi Rang Ramaayee
Jaage Ye Din Rain
(Meaning: You have a sweet smile, every part of your body shines, stealing my heart. Your transparent eyes hold the secrets of your heart. The colors of our love envelop me and, hence, my days are sunny)
The lines are not written in normal Hindi but in old Hindi (sounds like Sanskrit) and this is one of the reasons Gori Tore goes beyond most romantic numbers in Bollywood. The other, and more important, reason is the music – a delicious mix of the Indian and the Western. Guitars, sitars, veena, tablas, drums, synthesizers etc, melodically blend to lend a fresh feel to Gori Tore. Sandesh has hit bull’s eye with this one!
Sonu Nigam has done a good job. I last heard him in the sad version of O Saathiya from Saaya and hated his singing. But he is back with a bang here! He has given a controlled performance with no unwanted fluctuations in his voice and sounds very comfortable! I love the way he sings:
Chalat Chalat Pag Karat Kalaayein
Kaamdev Man Muskaaye
Chalat Chalat Chalat Chalat Chal Pag
Karat Karat Karat Kalaayein
Chalat Chalat Pag Karat Kalaayein
Kaamdev Man Muskaaye
A good fusion track – 9.5/10
Chodo Na Mujhe - Kunal Ganjawala
OH! I love this song! Chodo Na Mujhe is about a guy pleading his girlfriend to love him. It is a very simple song in terms of lyrics, music, and singing. But it is this simplicity that makes Chodo Na Mujhe endearing. Kunal Ganjawala sounds like a ‘boy next door’ completely smitten by his love as he eases through the number! The refrain, ”Ho O O O O Ho Ho, ” with drums in the background is infectious and you will find yourself whistling it long after the song is over!
I must mention that the following two lines stole my heart:
Kar Doge Inkaar To Jee Na Paayenge
Jo Kar Doge Iqraar To Mar Hi Jaayenge
Meaning: If you reject me I’ll not be able to live but if you love me I’ll die.
The guy implies that her rejection will cause him to lose his life out of sorrow but her acceptance will cause him to die out of happiness!!!! Notice the way the writer has cleverly used similar phrases, “Jee Na Paayenge” and “Mar Jaayenge” to imply different kinds of deaths.
It is such simple and meaningful lines, sung fluidly by Kunal that make Chodo Na rewind material!
Lovely – 10/10
Radha’s Theme – Instrumental
This is a soft instrumental theme, dominated by violins, that reminds you of an opera. As you listen to the song close your eyes. You will immediately picture your lover looking into your eyes and dancing in your arms.
Interesting – 9/10
There ends the songs of Rules – the music album. ‘Rules’ doesn’t have path breaking music and is definitely not a masterpiece, but it is still very appealing because of its simplicity. The singers, musician, and lyricist have sincerely attempted to appease the youth, and the result is enjoyable. Go grab it!
Rating for the album – 9/10
