SMS actually stands for Sawai Man Singh medical college Jaipur
(but Id prefer to say it SMART & PRACTICAL MEDICAL STUDIES).
As such Pink City Jaipur represents Rajasthan state: The Destination of every foreign tourist!
SMS is govt. Medical college and UG/PG program is through an entrance test. It has few open seats for All India Quota but about 75% is reserved for state candidates. Rajasthan, is not like UP or Bihar, though it lies geographically in same region.
The education level at school level is quiet superior (Mostly good schools are run by Christian Missionary) and the fight to enter in either PG/UG course is very tough. Every year thousands of well educated and trained students? fight for PMT and only about 500 get entry to govt medical colleges. Out of these, few hundreds after the tiring study of 5 years become MBBS and all the accumulated crowd of MBBS doctors then fight for PG seats, which are unfortunately very less for a general candidate (<150 At state level for 5 medical colleges).
Rajasthan as such has too many good education institutes of national and international repute like Mayo College, Ajmer; BITS Pilani, Poddar Institute of Management and of course SMS MC Jaipur! University of Rajasthan is as such rated as one of the top 5 at national level (By UPSC according to IAS results). It was really very fortunate that I did my PG in Radiodiagnosis from SMS MC, Jaipur.
I always remember the days at Hospital and Hostel. The institute is tertiary level referral hospital draining patients not only from Rajasthan but also from Punjab & Haryana. It has all superspecialities like Neurosurgery, cardio-thoracicsugery, neurology, cardiology, nephrology, gastro-enterology etc etc. The quality of treatment is good enough as far as a govt institute is concerned.
It is at par with AIIMS, New Delhi in any context, whether it is teachings(As non of the govt hospital teaches and medical learning is variable according to candidate and his hard work put) skills or treatment is concerned. Ill never forget my hectic residency of Radidiagnosis! About 18 hours of continuous duty (Sometime even longer without sleep) dealing with about 50 CAT scans in a night on a conventional machine, about 80 Ultrasounds per machine (About five machines in hospital) and 500 X-ray reporting a day!!!
What I learnt at SMS was really unforgettable. It is noteworthy that at SMS every department is so well functioning and overloaded that every resident has to work and learn-No other option! Like its south Indian counter part none of he SMSite gives importance to much of the theoretical knowledge (Obviously they need to give importance to pass the theory exams atleast) but due to their extensive exposure they all are well versed in practical work.
It is the reason, you will find an SMSite in every reputed hospital of the India and abroad (Including USA/UK) holding a respectable post, performing well acclaimed work in medicine and making India and SMS a pride. I think it is just because of the honesty (Upto a large extent) maintained in the entrance and professional examinations conducted by the University of Rajasthan (Unfortunate none of the exam at time).
I wish that govt maintain the standard in future and not to promote Donation/Private medical colleges in the state unlike South Indian states or Maharashtra and select cream and only cream of the intellectuals in the society to make doctors.
